Raced an IS 300

Too much posting today but what are you gonna do when too many things are happening...

Yesterday on I55 I see this BRAND NEW IS 300 in front of me. He had the temp, paper plates still on. I am doing 80mph and I cannot even start closing up...at this point he is 1/8 of a mile in front and there is some light traffic also going fast.

I had to do 90mph to start getting close and I am because he is caught up in traffic. But, I see that once these 3-4 cars clear there is a good 1/4 mile of open road ahead and I know he is going to nail it cos he was WTOing all along from before.

I am behind him still but close now (we are both on the center lane of a 3 lane HWY) and I am not sure if he saw me. I judge the situation so that when the traffic clears he will probably go on the left lane and nail it and I will go on the right lane and nail it. And it happens as I envisioned.

On the telemetry now. We are doing 70mph-72mph and I am in 3rd of course in SS.

We both hit it and for up to 85mpg-90mph we are about even with me POSSIBLY pulling very slightly. Once again my belief that this engine pulls hard only above 5000-5500rpm is reassured. The more we accelerate the more the rate of change of me pulling on him increases which makes things incremental. In other words, if I were pulling by 3% on him at 95mph, I was pulling 6% on him at 105mph.

Bottom line, at, or around this engine's power peak (above 5500rpm) the IS cannot even come close no matter how bad or good the driver is or is not.

To make it specific, we went all the way to 113-115 where 3rd ends for me and after 105mph I was pulling so clearly that I changed from the left lane to the center to the left lane where he was without a safety issue/problem.

But, our engine will not do much below 5000rpm guys to the IS. The IS is a torquey engine that makes power everywhere but runs out of breath at high rpm where we start the party. So to talk numbers, if you race on the highway and not from a stand still, go from 50-70mph where 2nd is at its best or from 85-113mph where 3rd is at its best. Those are the 2 choices in my opinion.

I don't care about anyone's problems with VTEC engines not having a lot of torque down low---there is nothing more demoralizing than when you are racing and you get the jump only for the other car to blow by you once your car runs out of breath and the VTEC is just hitting its sweet spot. Oh how this pisses people off.

JZ,

maybe you meant to say:

"---there is nothing more demoralizing than when you are racing and you get the jump only for the other car to fall behind once their car runs out of breath and the VTEC is just hitting its sweet spot. Oh how this pisses people off. "

I think that is one of the main reasons for owning an Acura or Honda..... to piss off the other guys during racing... hehe... just watch my CLS's butt as she pulls away from you at 6000 rpm...... oooh yeah... oops...damn i need some kleenex....

i don't know about you guys, but i've seen maybe 10 is300's, and 9 out of those 10 either had an middle aged man or woman in it (i think i've seen more women too).

i think the same goes with the cl though, but that was acura's intention anyway.

there's nothing wrong with demoralizing middle aged men and women who drive the is300.
