Absolutely. I have a Valentine V1 in my car, except I spent the $400 for one brand new. It works ridiculously well. Just remember that the Ka band is the one in which cops are using radar. The other ones are just security etc.
As for it being used, it's not a wear and tear item, like a cold air intake or even a CD player. It's just plugged into the outlet, turned on and you're done. There should be no defects and for $220 I'd say get it tonight!

$220 is a good price if it's a current 1.8 version with POP. If not you have to upgrade it & the $$ for that added , you might as well buy a new one.

Get the serial # & plug it into V1's upgrade site. They will tell you how much it will be to upgrade it. Add that to the $220. Also add the cost of shipping it to V1.
You'll likely come out ahead in the used 1 by $20 or so, but it's worth that extra for a brand new unit with warranty & all new accessories.

it will work fine, but you wont have as good of protection. if you are paying 220 for something outa date from valentine why not get an uptoday passport for that much? i have a passport 8500 x50. i think its just as good as the v1 if not better. the only thing the valentine has over passport is the arrows, which dont really matter to me. when my radar goes off regardless of what it says i slow down instantly.

"Spectre" and "VX2" (sp?)
Those are the systems that detect RD detectors. V1 & escort are immune to them.
And you will be ok not upgrading the V1 now. But I would do it when you have the cash. Save up for it.
I know people say the 8500, it does work well, I've had it, but once you used the arrows & seen that 1 feature save your ass from a ticket, you'll never go back.
