Question for CAI owners

Someone had mentionned how rain/water seems to collect from the hood and splash directly onto the air-filter.

Since this is the filter itself that is soaking wet, the by-pass does little for us.

My question: What do we do on a rainy day? Do we have to drive very carefully/slowly? Never mind the puddles that may or not be on the road, but what about the air-filter being completely soaked? Is that a concern?

Thanks for any insight.

Cripp,

My question/concern as well (esp. living in the Northwest) - that is, surely some aerosolization/microaspiration of water must occur when you have a very wet filter - but how much is too much or bad? I've done a few things already to try to minimize the amount of water splash that reaches the Xephyr filter:

- make sure the two drain holes at the bottom of the concave shaped area of the splash guard are not plugged with dirt (mine were, thus causing a 'puddle' of water to slosh around at the bottom of the splash guard, likely contributing to a wet filter).

- I tried to elevate the vertical height of the entire CAI assembly, at least so that the angle of entry into the VSA throttle body was completely horizontal; this way there is at least a couple of inches clearance between the bottom of the filter and the splash guard basin. This did require an additional bracket of sorts (I can post pics later if you're interested).

- I think the openings at the bottom of the splash guard (both the narrow slits and the larger oval shaped ones) allow too much entry of 'splash water'. I tried to modify these with adhering plastic weather guard material in such a way to allow equal airflow, but less 'back splash'

- As others have suggested, I also placed thick foam weather stripping underneath the hood on that side.

Despite these things, I think the filter will still get wet when it rains a lot or when there is a lot of road splash - it'd be nice to know how bad (or not bad) a wet air filter is...

just drive it. think about it, for your engine to flood you would have to drive thrwo about a foot and a half of water. not gona happen unless u offroad your CL. i've driven throw some pretty big puddles and nothing has happened yet.

But i think other concerns may be that since the CAI is getting wet so often, the oil is so easily washed away that you'd have to reapply more than normal. And is this hassle worth having to have this as a concern? Many of us wash our cars very often and when the soapy water gets on it, it defintely washes a great deal of the oil away. Any solutions??

Might be a stupid question, but how are you suppose to clean it, and oil it?

It requires a cleaning kit that soaks and oils the filter element. Here is a link to a pretty good price on the kit http://www.autobarn.net/knfiloilclea.html .
