Let's pretend you were given the choice between a used 1998 Honda Prelude Coupe 2d, and a 1998 Acura Integra GS-R coupe. Eh? The cars sell for about 12 and 11 grand (respectivly). You may have seen this question coming but - which would you choose and why? bah, and saying 'neither' is not an option!

Both need boost... both would be nice to drive... both can have a lot of power...

However, the Prelude will never have the weight advantage nor balance that the Integra can.

I owned a first 94' GS-R. I kept it stock and I loved it and I swore when I got the money I'd buy one again. Two drawbacks though. 1. People tried to steal it or its parts/emblems regularly. 2. So many people already one, which they need parts/emblems for so they steal.

Although I do like the exterior styling of the prelude better than the GS-R, especially with the honda ground effects.

 

Thanks guys. I think the prelude has a 2.2 liter vtech engine, while the teg has a 1.8 vtech. But the integra is more agile, am I right? I guess it comes down to what you're all about, power or agility. or am I missing something huge here.

 

I would check them both out. More mods available for the Integra but the Prelude has some more HP to start with and is a little less common. If you're just planning some mild mods I'd go with the 'Lude.

 

I had a '98 GSR...that thing was sweet! I wish it never got totalled but I would say go for the 'Teg. The car handles very well and the interior layout, IMHO, was a bit nicer. My friend has a '98 Prelude and it's alright. I still like the feel of the GSR more and, personally I like the styling of the GSR more. The Prelude will probably be faster though.

 

Prelude hands down ! more HP and much better handling... Also VTEC kick in the lude around 5100 rpm

I'd take the Prelude .It's way better looking than o'le four eyes the Integra .

Prelude won best handling car under $30k a few years ago in Car and Driver if I remember correctly.

 

That's when comparing stock suspensions perhaps. The Prelude may outhandle the GS-R however it will not and will NEVER outhandle the good ole ITR. If they rated it higher than the ITR then they are just plain wrong. The balance on the ITR is impecabble.

Power wise the GS-R and the Prelude will run very similar times b/c some of you seem to forget the power/weight ratio is similar.

So here's what you gotta do... get the GS-R... get a Type-R suspension or another custom suspension of some sort... turbo on the GS-R... done...

You can do the same to the prelude and achieve similar power. Just b/c the prelude starts out with more power doens't mean it's a better car... remember that it's a pretty hefty car.

Power to weight/handling/balance is what the game is all about. The GS-R will outdo the Prelude or at least tie with it in all categories.

 

o yeah, but the prelude does really look good with that OEM kit or the Mugen front end.

when you get the GS-R don't forget the JDM front end conversion

 

You are forgetting about a stock Prelude Type SH if you want to bring up the ITR.

A stock SH will beat the shit out of many cars in the twisties hands down.

I say Prelude, sexier, nicer cleaner interior, more sporty.

 

the SH isn't anywhere near where the ITR is.

Id take the Lude based on looks and theres a lot of good kits for it as well....the GSR is nice as well but just dont like the looks as much....both have great power though.

 

I was about to either get a Lude SH or an ITR before I got the CLS I would probably go with the gsr if u want to go for more speed than go with the Teg but if u want something differant something not everyone on the block has then go with the lude . Another thing ludes seem very cramped up when I went and test drove one . Integra seems to have a bit more room but thats just me .

 

I owned a '95 GS-R and a '98 Prelude SH. I'd definitely go for the Prelude, even if it was the base model. It is just as fast, handles quite a bit better, and feels more solid. The GS-R is freaking loud at highway speeds, and while the Prelude is no LS400, it is much less taxing to do a coupla hour drive on the highway than the Integra ever was. I thought the interior materials were a little higher end on the Prelude as well, I especially think the center stack on the Integra looks awful cheap.

 

i'd get the prelude. tegs are fockin everywhere. dime a dozen.

 

hmm both are tuff choices...for sports enthusiats and purists i would go integra...for long distance/daily driving i would go prelude.

if you are gonna seriously mod the cars with turbo or S/C i would instead get a 97-98 nissan 240sx and swap the motor :P

if u want to compare ITR u might as well compare prelude Type-S or Sir Spec.

prelude won best handling for 30k twice by car and driver.
also came in 3rd behind viper and m3 in cars over 30k

I had a '97 Prelude SH 5MT and it handled like it was on rails, moreso with aftermarket Pirelli tires. .93g on the skidpad. Not many production cars can match/beat that for the price.

I'd pick the Prelude over an Integra any day. I would have bought another one had they not discontinued them in 2001.

 

we're comparing b/c the GS-R is easily and often suspension modded into the ITR suspension.

changeover for base model prelude to SH is not as common b/c of difficulties with ATTS. I don't know enough about the JDM spec'ed Type S or SiR in the '97-'01 years. As far as I'm concerned the differences are mainly in the engine and it's incrase compression for the JDM spec'ed S and SiR.

Anybody got a link for suspension differences between base model prelude/SH/S/SiR ???

 

I have been in a turbo lude H22 making 305 at the wheels on stock internals. The guy has been driving the car for 2 years and over 30k as a daily driver and has not seen any problems yet. All he has is a chip(dont know which company), FPR, apexi vtec controller, boost controller and gauges.

 

i drove the last gen of the Preludes (it was like a 99 or 00). anyhow I LOVED it. it had awesome handling good powerband. Matter of fact (i hope it doesn't happen)(knock on wood) if my F22 in my Accord ever pukes I'm getting a JDM H22 motor(from a late model Prelude).

It makes me drool for that type R, but I think that's getting out of the question for me. I'd love one, but for now, I'm looking for a practicel every day driver. I think I'm going lude, but not sure yet.

 

My beef with the Integra is that it has very little torque at typical cruising RPMs. You have to downshift a couple gears to keep up with just about anything. The Prelude makes alot more torque, making it more enjoyable to drive.

 

either way I don't think you'll be dissappointed... both are great cars and very very reliable. jjust make sure you don't buy anything that has been modified or you'll be looking at a buttload of trouble later on if that person hasn't taken care of it.

look at prices for the '98 ITR in that beautiful championship white. they're not too extreme right now.

 

Having owned a couple of Preludes over the years and had room mates or friends with Integras, I would take the Prelude. Both are great cars but the 'Lude's always seemed more refined and were more fun to drive IMO. This is going on impressions of driving both cars in stock form. Realistically you won't go wrong with either though.

 

I'm definitely partial to the Prelude having owned an '88 Prelude 2.0Si 4WS back many years ago. Wow, I am getting old as I sold that car twleve years ago. But that 4WS was certainly fun and the car as a whole was what lead me back to Honda/Acura.
