POLL: Got a bent rim before???

I am curious on how many people bentthere rims before and what tire sizes they been using. I'm hoping ot get a large response here and come up witjh some sort of finding, so if you guys have a minute to do this poll that would be just fantastic! I'm going to be assuming that you people are using proper cold PSI...

dude, if your trying to prevent bending a rim, it has to do with your driving and the size of the potholes. i blew a tire and bent a wheel in the rain cuz I was being dumb and dipping in and out of traffic right into a pothole that just looked like a puddle. then again this is NY we're talking about... just be careful and you shouldn't have a problem...

It seems as though there is no safe bet with any rim and tire combo. What do you guys do once you bend them, do you get them fixed? Report the pothole? Anyone ever get any money back from the road authority?

I tried here in NY. I hit a bunch of ruts in the road on the BQE and got a flat tire. Called Acura road assistance and they said that they couldn't help me because they didn't service that area! After changing my flat, I went to Acura to get a new tire (big mistake). About $250 later I got my new tire and sent the receipt to the department in NYC. They replied a year later that they couldn't prove that anything was wrong with the road. Of course they couldn't cause they had already fixed it!

There's no 'safe setup' for rims/tires. Especially when talking 18s. to prevent rubbing you'll want probably no bigger than a 45 on there, and even that may be too big. If you get rims, you run the risk of bending them. It sux but watch out for potholes and don't hit curbs. No matter what tire combo you have you can bend rims.

What if I move down to 17" rims and 235/45/17 tires, do you guys think that will be safer? Any reccomendation on rim brands or tires that are known to be a little better against bending?

All you can do is buy nice expensive steel rims. If you find the strongest rims around you will have a harder time, but get whatever rims will make you most happy. There is no reason to get smaller rims just to avoid bending them cause it's not gonna make a difference. Any rim will bend if you hit a curb or a big pothole. Just a sad fact about rims. I've bent my factory rim before and thats a 16. 12" rims would bend just as easy. So get whatever looks best to you and that you will be happy with, and don't short change yourself on 18" just because of rims.

But with a smaller rim, your tire sidewall can be larger, hence absorbing more impact when you hit a large pothole. I know it doesn;t exactly look great, but at least your not out a few hundred bucks to get a new rim....right?

The fact that at least one person has had a bent rim on all the setups (i don't think anybody has an 18" with 50 series tires on it) goes to show you something. Just get whatever rims you want. You can't avoid bending rims. Sometimes it just happens. What if you curb check? The series of tire you have isn't going to prevent a curb from bending your rims. Just get whatever you think looks the best and don't worry about getting them bent.

well isnt it a fact that if you have 17s over 18s you runs a little less risk with bending your rims?

Generally speaking, yes.

Buy a truck with big tires if you don't want the unfortunate experience of bending a rim.
