Parking habits (Survey)

Mike reminded me of a dilemma I have all the time by a comment he made in a previous post .. about parking. So I thought I'd see what everyone else on this board thinks ..
What are your parking habits? Would you rather :

a) Park like a regular guy (not like a nut next to a beat up rusted old van), but like everyone else and run the everyday risk of being dinged?
-or-
b) Park all the way at the end of the parking lot, where your car is all by itself, and will attract attention, and some jealous SOB will come and key or ding you just cuz he thinks you are a snob?

I always always parked at the farthest lot that there's no cars besides me.There's a lot of people today that dont give a shit about hitting your car and scrathing it. Sometimes my freind will tell me "Hay where did u park China?"

I don't park all the way at the end of the parking lot b/c chances are that some asshole is going to park right beside you and hit your car anyways. I try to park next to cars that are somewhat properly parked with small doors. For example, I wouldn't park next to a Cadi that's parked crooked or an old rusted van.

End spots are important (just watch the rims while cozying up to that curb, though!), but what I REALLY look for is SHADE. MY CL-S replaced my 1980 RX-7 GS, which I always garaged and parked in the shade WHENEVER HUMANLY POSSIBLE. Its paint job still looks nearly-new, except for the hood, which has faded and crazed a bit due to exposure to engine heat.

Now, if there's a nice shady spot located next to some hulking rust bucket with 6-foot doors, I'll likely pass and break out the sunshade. But I'll go to great lengths to find shade. I don't mind walking the extra distance.

Many people tell me that shade usually means trees and the bird mess that comes with them. My feeling (and experience) is that as long as I keep my car waxed/polished/whatever and wash it regularly (weekly, if possible), It'll be OK.

I always try to get an end spot, and park close to the curb or wall, so there is a less chance of the one car next to me to ding my car.

I always do C) Park enough away that cars will likely not park by you but not the edge of the parking lot where it looks like you are a freak about your car and some punk will key you. This way it looks like I am an employee at the store or just a bunch of cars left.

Personally I do the reasonable thing and try and find an end spot. If there isn't one available then it's BFE for me!

advice for BFE parkers: bring lots of water and tennis shoes.

I usually part with one or two spaces away from other cars. Unless the cars are somethign nicelike a Mercedes/BMW etc, I avoid Mustangs and Fbods at all costs. Fbody drivers are assholes... Mustang (especially 5.0 Fox Bodies) tend to be jerks too. What type of person would you expect to drive a $3,000 car?

I usually look for end spaces or spaces or park far back enough so that no other cars will park next to me, if the lot is full, I will look for a space next to another nice car, since they don't want their doors dinged either.

I've been tempted to take up two parking spaces on occasion, but I know as soon as I do, i'll regret it! I love those cement pillars in underground parking garages.. I get cozy next to them- no one normally likes to park near them.

If I KNOW parking is going to be difficult(going to SF) I have my buddies drive!

It all depends on where I'm at. I normally park close if I can, but I always try to get a spot where the cars next to me are parked straight. I never park crooked.... never! Also, I never take more than one space, even when parking way out.

I'll one of those who parks really far away from everyone..however, everytime I come out of a store, I always find some car (mostly junkies) parked next to my car, I'm like "Why are you parking next to me, There are like 10 -15 empty parking spaces all around the area".. I especially notice that people park next to me more on the CL than any other car I have owned.

well I try to park in the front , so that Iwill have only one idiot to contend with . But if not possible I go for the furthest. OR if nothing else park next to a nice car, that way you have a better chance of not getting dinged.

I will never take up 2 spaces. I have seen this happen and it urks me. Especially if someone does it in a CLOSE parking space. Doesn't urk me as much when they are way out in BFE. Try to park next to newer MB, BMW, CADDY, etc. Cause they are new cars and hopefully they respect their car and won't want to ding it. I usually park not quite in BFE, but a little further out then the last car. But just not so obvious. I always park straight even if I have to pull in and out a couple of times. And if I HAVE TO park in between 2 cars, I park closer to the newer, nicer car, but still straight. I also try to cop the end spaces, cause it reduces the cars around you by 1. Also I can park really close to the curb(of course without hitting it) and I will be further away from the other car. (I usually have someone guide me into the spot and get close to the curb.)

I generally find a spot that has a fair amount of room, i.e. the people parked next to me are leaving me lots of room.

I don't like having open spots next to me because who knows what kind of bozo is going to park next to you.

Ideal spot is parking next to a post/pillar which is on my right side. The idea being that if you're going to get a door dinged it will probably be your passenger side.
The guy to your right will always have a driver, but the person parking to your left may not have a passenger. Not that it makes any differnce in parking lots where you can drive straight through and park on the far side!

Do you think it's really safe? I just changed my mind today. A lady's car was hit and run this morning by a neighbor employee.
I guess from now on I park in the cemetery across the street. My car will park in peace

I just park far enough so there are not many cars around but closed enough so my car is not the only car around.

I wouldnt park next to another CL. Everyone know CL's doors are bigger than any sedan's. I would park 1 car away from another CL since the other CCL driver pick a good car to park next to so I'd do the same

1. Park as far away as possible -- SUVs will by some mystery park next to me, and I'm a 1/8 mile away from any other cars AND I have this monster next to me???

2. Better -- park in corner or end space with car slightly over the line. Nothing too radical, just far enough to eliminate one side of the car getting bashed, and use up enough room on end to allow car next to mine to have tons of room.

3. Best -- Hire Ninjas to guard car. Make sure all are in full regalia, and have Num-Chucks at the ready. (Ok, just kidding)

Tips for discovering that you don't want to park next to someone.

1. Look at car parked next to you. Examine the edge of the door. Is the door edge paint chipped? Is the door edge paint chipped badly from top to bottom (like a battering ram)? If it is chipped, move on to a new space -- you've discovered the location of a Black-belt Ding-master.

2. Look at the door edge again. Does the person have a stainless steel strip along the edge of the door. If answer is yes, move away and don't park anywhere near this person, they will make you cry -- you've now discovered a Ding Master Sensei!

Haha Damm right you will. I've spit HUGE hauckers on hoods of cars that have done this(when their is no other parking), now if you were way out at the BFE spot, that's a diff. story

Man, this is funny this topic came up.

Today, actually 3 hours ago, I went to the local home depot ( I am always in and out of these places all over the city) Anyways, I parked WAY the FUCK away because we all know that home depot is a BATTLE GROUND for fucking door dings.... When I come out, sure enough their is a ford F-250 parked very close to me, I say DAMMIT. And as I come to my car, I check the passinger side where this fucknut parked, and as I am checking, I see a slight ding that was not their earlier today. I KNEW IT WAS HIM.

Whadda know, He come out to his truck and looks at me, I look at him , then look at 3 of his BIG buddies and say to my self, ahh fuck it. its a small ding. (Plus I have the hook-up at dent wizard ) These 4 guys piled into a ford pickup kingcab, And they were assholes, because as I was driving down kendall, they quickly came up on me and were driving like assholes.

Fucking pricks. (yeah I am a little bit ticked)

I don't have a problem walking, so I park out in BFE. At work there's a few of us who have new cars so we all park out together and take up a bunch of spots so no one can park around us. It's not that big of a deal though cause there's still plenty of spots left.

I almost forgot, I have a friend who used to carry around cards in his wallet that he would leave on the windshields of cars who were taking up more than one spot. The card said: I hope you don't fuck like you park.

B because at least they have to go out of their way to key it and I don't worry about my car while I'm in the store because I know some fat bitch in a minivan isn't gonna FWAP-BAM her door open into my car as she spills out of the doorway.

And if it's all alone out near the end of the lot, it's really easy to notice someone dicking with it, so they wouldn't be so likely to dick with it.

oh yeah! totally! the best part is that when you park out in BFE, the other newer cars in the lot will come park next to you. At my work, its almost like an exclusive parking club. There's a porche, a couple jags, couple bimmers and couple benzs, a lincoln mark VII (or whatever), we park all the way at the end of our parking lot. and after me, everyone started backing into the parking spot. so its like a dealership. all these beautiful cars, parked straight neck to neck, pointing outwards I love the thought that I was the one who started it all!

This is how I park.

1) Never parallel, I don't care where I am at unless there is about 40 feet of space.

2) Try to park in the last spot so nobody can park next to me.

3) Never park backwards, people tend to think you want to show off your ride so they hate and scratch your shit up.

4) Park about 4-8 empty spots away so if it does get busy I should still have a couple of empty spots next to mine.

5) And last NEVER EVER park next to those F*cking SUV's. I hate them all!!! Especially the women, they have a hard time getting in those things to begin with and with parking spots getting smaller and smaller they tend to care less and less about smashing in your doors.

I park a mile away if necessary. I will never take up 2 spaces, that drives me crazy !! The only thing that makes me angrier are all these idiots parking in handicapped zones using grandmas permit. Most recent sighting was a woman who parks in front of the cash machine and runs up to beat me. She certainly had good use of her legs for a "handicapped" person !!

No place is SAFE anymore...........but I do try to seek out 4 door cars because their doors are shorter and don't reach far enough to dink. SUV's???? as far away as possible.
