Painting Y-Pipe / Mufflers - Thoughts??

i am thinking of doing this over the weekend and was wondering if anyone had any advice or ideas for me.

I have the High-Heat Spray paint.

I know some people have done this and I was just curious if there is anything I need to watch out for while attempting this.... It seems pretty straight forward to me.

1 question... what's the best way to clean the Y-Pipe/Mufflers before painting??

THANKS!

do you have to detach the y-pipe to paint it?

I'm not going to.... just going to jack up the rear end one side at a time.... Then Spray away

I'm not all that worried about overspray, after all it's just the underside of the chasis

Use lots of masking tape and newspaper. It's really easy to do. Just take your time. Let it dry for a while, a few hours. before driving.

What's the point in doing it at all then?

Because you can easily see the nasty Y-Pipe and mufflers from behind the car.

You will NOT be able to see any overspray on the underside on the car...

Re: painting

Hi Dom, I have a 2001 Accord coupe V6 and one of the things I hated the most was taking a look at the underneath of the car.It is just ratty and nasty. The mufflers and ypipe are so low that you can practically see everything.
I decided to pull my stock mufflers and installed comptechs. But before I did that I did paint my Y pipe. The best thing to do is to get some steel wool and just give it a quick brush and then wipe it down with a clean moist towel..just to get any dust or dirt off and allow to dry before painting. I strongly suggest you tape and newspaper your wheels/rims. You may want to be careful and end up spraying the inside of your rims..it has happened. Allow it to dry and repaint within 30 mins until coat is thick and even. make sure to use high heat mainfold paint..and brake caliper paint won't cut it. And if you are going to do the mufflers I suggest you take them off to do a good job. You can prep it the same way..use steel wool. Hopefully this helped you out.

Re: Re: painting

Thanks man... didn't think about the steel wool, but sounds like a good idea.

I will cover the rims for sure.. don't want paint over the scracthes on accident....

My catalogs are out of reach at the moment, but here is a link for a start:

Eastwood auto tools & supplies page:
http://www.eastwoodcompany.com/cgi-bin/sgsh0101.exe

VHT:
http://www.racesearch.com/CGImp/mhp?...t=68&man=10748

(I even had a listing for the VHT and another brand of manifold paint in a home improvement catalog [go figure])

when you use the steel wool, are you trying to get rid of the rust, or are you trying to rough it up so the paint adheres?

Both. Wipe it down with Acetone before painting. I used BBQ grille paint in silver but I left the mufflers black and I wax them.....

Ok guys.... thanks for the ideas. I'm going out now to wash the car, then take the steel wool to the Y-Pipe... Do a little maskiing, then spray it.

I'll probably wait on the muffelers to make sure I don't Fvck Up the Y-Pipe... should have pics posted by this afternnon!!!

Wish me Luck!!

Good luck, I'll wait to see your pics. Then I think I'm going to do mine on Sunday (tomorrow).
