That's the number of degress it will adjust plus or minus. The most you can adjust is + or - 3 degrees. Also remember, the outside temperature gauge is not considered to be displaying an accurate reading until you are traveling faster than 35 mph and you are not following another car. Any other situation can adversely affect readings. Also, upon start-up it can take upwards of 10 minutes for the probe to acclimate and properly display the correct temperature. This is most noticeable if you park your car in the garage and then go outside on a very hot or very cold day. It may take up to 10 minutes before you get the true temperature reading.

it adds or subtracts the digit from the temp it's displaying. So if your temp reads 70 and it's 73 then you need to hit +3. Get it?

You can only adjust +3 or -3 from what the gauge reads period. If it reads 73 and it is 70 you can adjust it to -3 and it will read 70. Now you are permantly adjusted to -3 of whatever it thinks it is outside. If you try and adjust more it will just go 1,2,3,0,-1,-2,-3 again and if you stop on -3 it will still read 70. It only has 6 possible degrees of adjustment.
