OT-Volvo S60 "R"

Went to a Volvo sponsored driving school last weekend where they had the new V60 “R” to drive.
I am in lust! 300HP & 290 ft lb of torque from 1900 rpm. 4 wheel drive with “active suspension”. 6 speed with 18" Pirelli P Zeros. This car ain’t like any Volvo I have ever seen before. Kind of sorry I got a IS300 for my wife three weeks ago. It sure is fun to abuse someone else’s tires!

Dan, post pics. I haven't seen it yet. I'm not very keen of Volvo's. Granted many say they are extremely reliable auto's, looks do mean alot.

This belongs to a guy on the Volvo board, very nice...black with Atacama Natural leather.

Can't wait to get mine, hopefully the software and exhaust upgrades will be out soon. I'm not holding my breath for lowering springs, due to the fancy suspension.

Also, it has 295lbs ft. of torque (not 290) .

Yeah I went and wailed on a couple of those over the weekend too. The cool thing was they had mostly 6-Speed manuals to drive! I got the 4th fastest time out of the whole group on the little course I really dig the suspension adjustment and AWD was great when flooring it around corners . Oh and 15psi is a lot of boost that you can DEFINITELY feel 'kick-in'! I liked the Volvo-R!!

I didn't get it, its $1900 and lowers the residual by 2 points. Its DVD based and the controls are on the steering wheel (side of the column I believe).

From what I hear its a good Nav (no real complaints), but it's not quite as intuitive as the Acura system.

Nice ads for it in the current car mags. The specs sound amazing, a sleeper for sure.

Nice to hear about something other than a 350Z or G35 whatever. Stealth cars like the Volvo R are fun. The blue dials are interesting. What are these things going for?

I had the pleasure of checking one of these out over memorial day weeked. NICE PIECE OF METAL for 46K!!

They are limited production and only a few dealers get more than one in at a time.

........for you family guys they make the S70R Wagon which has the same specs but allows for an extra audience inside!!

Nice pics on that S60R. I love the blue dials and the Nav pop-up however the dash looks a bit weird with all those buttons. Can't argue with the specs however.

The navi feels a bit tacked-on:

no touch screen
very basic abilities
minimal controls take a while to enter things (touch screen would help a lot here)
pop up is neat but a bit odd at the same time

That is wierd, why would that lower the residual on the car?

This car is PERFECT. Look how solid this car looks. There's no signs of cheap plastics or anything. The seats look sooo comfortable. The safety; we all know about Volvo safety. I had a Volvo and man it was probably the best car I've owned. It was an '89 model and it feels way more solid than any car I've had.

Most car companies that have Nav as optional equipment usually have a lower residual for it when someone chooses it (including Lexus and Acura).

The Banks feel that if someone chooses the Navigation system, the individual is more likely to put excessive miles on the car (due to traveling). Also, being on the road more (traveling), you have more of a chance of being in an accident. This is why there is a lower residual on the Nav car.

Crazy S.- the S60R bases at just under $37k....but once you start adding some of the nice toys, you can go up slightly past $45k.

bkknight369- My car is due in July 11th or so, the rims on the above car are the optional 18s (17s are standard).

The attention to detail in the interior is a real surprise, Volvo has always done a nice job with their R models....but the new ones are really something (notice above the gauges how the overhang is leather stitched in blue, nice touch).

Has any magazine tested 0-60 and/or 1/4 mile times on it yet?

There hasn't been a full U.S. report yet, but Top Gear got 0-60 in 5.4sec, Motorweek drove it and got 0-60 in 5.8sec (which isn't really a surprise because they drive like old ladies).

If I had to guess, the times will range from 5.4-5.6 as and average, quarter mile in the 14.2-14.4 range. Hoping that an upgraded ECU will bring the car down to 5.0-5.1sec to 60.

That car is beautiful..in an understated way definitely! I love those pearl blue gauges

And after taking an 800 mile road trip in a V70 non-stop (execpt for gas) I can say that Volvo's have the BEST seats I've EVER sat in! The ergonomics are absolutely perfect (for me at least). Oh and the car was definitely ROCK solid...ka-thunk.

That's the perfect car for me (down the line) I want one!

Speed Channel is currently broadcasting a half hour infomercial. Look for "Volvo test drive" on your guides. It's Tommy Kendall and Bobby Rayhall driving the Volvo R's on some racetrack. Good Stuff!

Volvo has really improved their "boxy" look but I have a problem with the name. How can you drive a car with a name that sounds like part of the female reproductive system?

belt im pretty confident that chipping it will definetly put you in the 4.9-5.1 0-60 range.

very nice

im kinda curiuos what tire size they are using on the optional 18" rims

btw carpoint also says 5.4 seconds0-60

Based on the Performance Concept Car shown at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, the R models are faster than anything ever sold by Volvo. Powering this new Volvo is a 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission. The performance numbers are impressive: the S60 R reaches 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.4 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph.

Lets hope, because that's a big reason why I'm going with this car. I mean, the car is totally awesome, but there is a downside. I lease my cars and the Volvo has a 54% residual for 36 months and the S4 is most likely going to fall in the 58% area (may be higher). So, that right there would offset much of the S4s higher price. When the car comes in, I'm going to sit down with the guy then I'm going to go price an S4. I hate paying more for a less expensive car.

The tires size used are 235/40 (8x18), I think the S4 uses the same specs.

sounds good, yeah the S4 uses 235/40/18 as well.

235/40 is gonna have pretty low profile, which is one of the reasons ride comfort isnt gonna be 10/10 on the S4 or the S60R

im not certain, but im pretty sure that the M3 gets more profile than that..

Both are great cars, i cant wait till i test drive one, i wanna see how their AWD feels like.

rule of thumb with audi is that a chip on any of their turbo cars, is that a chip will always lower your 0-60 by a second....i dont know how accurate this info is, but everyone on Audiworld lives by it, and from the numbers i have seen, they seem to be about right...

thats why i would bet the least you would get is 4.9-5.1

Does the S60R come with HID headlights? I notice that Volvo doesn't offer HID's on any of their product line...WHY?

I love everything else about the S60R though (300hp...295lb/ft...Brembos...6 speed manual...All Wheel Drive...3 way adjustable suspension) WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?

:phatyo: Active Chassis Settings OWN! I love being able to change it. And it actually makes a difference... a BIG one!! Only thing is allllllllll those extra sensors and controllers and servos, etc. kinda make me nervous . That's a lot that can go wrong...?

Not sure, but I doubt it as the S60R just came out.

The S60R does indeed come with Bi-Xenon headlamps.

they are optional on the XC90 suv....and as belt just said, the R has them.....I also remember seeing that the 04 S80 has HID too.... I guess they are just late to the game.
