Only 220 on a whole tank!!! WTF?

2003 cl-s auto.....72k miles......I did all city driving on this full tank of gas without flooring it one time...I only got 220 miles to the tank till the gas light came on...thats only like 14-15 miles per gallon. what gives? Let me know guys...should atleast be around 20 per gallon i thought.

I have noticed a slight decrease in fuel mileage with the mixture of ethanol in fuel. I was getting an average of 25 in combination interstate, and city. Note, I live in Montgomery County, MD where traffic sucks ass. Now I average about 22 miles per gallon overall.

I have a 6 speed. I am a bit heavy on the gas pedal.

It could be something as simple as bad gas. Fill up and run another tank from a different gas station.

I usually get around 18-19 mpg because I drive in an area where there is a light every half mile and you will catch at least half of the lights at all times. I miss the highway so much ....

I drive mostly highway and get about 28-32MPG depending how I drive. But in the city, I never get anymore than 21MPG...

My guess is that you didn't fill it up all the way last time you tanked up... that and maybe you've been in vtec too much lately... Fill it up, and see if it does it again... Then you can start complaining

I've got every gas stop I've ever made w/ my CLS in a log book, so I can accurately check on fuel economy... It's been about 22-23 mpg for the last 4 years (52K miles)... Making assumptions based on one tank of gas doesn't work... Some tanks I get less mileage then others, but overall it all averages out.

Don't they teach you guys Scientific Method in school anymore ?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method

We need repeatable, observable, empirical evidence before we can make judgement...

Oh, maybe you just wanted some WAG's (wild ass guesses) ??

edit: I've noticed that alot of people don't even know how to calculate gas mileage correctly...

check the air filter.

almost all the time with my friends vehicle that turns out to be the culprit.

my friends mustang (v6-stick) was getting 8 to 9 mpg, we cleaned out the filter on the CAI put in by the previous owner, he is now getting 19 mpg with not too much effort.

The filter was pretty damn dirty for the record.

I'm lucky if I can break 200 miles to a tank. Weird thing is, my pilot is the same way, alot of city driving and shitty north eastern gas.

that's strange
do you think that gas stations easing into their winter-blend gas early due to the drop in temperature could be the culprit? it probably varies from station to station.

i just got 25.4mpg w/ 369 miles to the tank,
which seems abnormally high for me....

Man, pass me some of that gas...I average 18.8 all city driving doing an average of 40mph. I've been looking for a good gas station here, but haven't found one. There's on Shell gas station on the way to Houston that I get great mpg from, I just wish it wasn't a 45min drive to it.

I get about 22-24 with my mix of highway/city, but in Orlando rush hour highway=parking lot!! Pure highway cruising I get 28-31 depending how loaded down I am. I just put the Acura Top Engine cleaner in my car and it blew out lots of soot. Maybe you need a good internal cleaning! Other than that, check your air filter I guess.

I use to get about 17 when I did all city. I got about 23 for mixed driving and up to 32 for all highway.

As far as miles per tank I got 235 mostly city, about 310 mixed and 440 all highway.

I saw no difference in mileage and performance when I went from Premium gas to Plus.

If that really is all city driving, it's not too terrible. This may sound stupidly obvious, but have you checked your tire pressure?

I have a 01 CLS auto with 63000miles and i've been testing my MPG and i've been averaging 12 to 13.33 MPG.. thats city and highway miles. The car is horrible.. i just ordered NGK iridiums IX to see if it helps.. the only mod in the car is the AEM CAI.. with the stock intake.. same mileage. I get about 180-200 a tank.. anyone have any idea of what the problem is?.. if no one does i'll change everything from sensors to plugs..

Gees, thats horrible. 200 miles per tank...

You're not trying to set a land speed record from stop sign to stop sign, I have some buddies who drive like that and they get horrible gas mileage.

But for that bad of gas mileage,
1.) use a fuel infector cleaner like Lucas.
2.) Clean your air filter again.
3.) Spark plugs like you said.
4.) What viscocity oil are you using???
5.) Get a scan tool and see if your engine is tossing any codes..

yeah.. ur tellin me.. its definitely horrible.. this is with normal driving(not driving hard).. thats why i figure something is wrong with the car.. i put a fuel injector cleaner every couple thousand mile and i know the filter is not the problem. i'm using 5w-30 motor old and i just order the spark plugs. If that doesn't help.. maybe check the oxygen sensors. Where could i get a scan tool to check for codes?

Take it to Auto Zone I think.

Also, change your PCV Valve while you're at it. It only costs like 10 bucks from NAPA, most people forget about this, but this wouldn't be your gas culrpit, just help with routine maintenence.

I have not figured out how many miles per gallon I get, before the turbo kit I would get 320-325 to a tank.

Now that it is turbocharged on the first full tank I got 317 miles, this is running 12-1 on the FMU which equals 8.0-1 on air fuel(way too rich) and 6 pounds of boost on an automatic.

I've got 141K+ on my CL, and can still easily pull 32mpg when doing only freeway driving, or 22-25 mpg when doing combined (depending on how hard I am on the gas). In fact last month my wife and I made a trip to santa clara and I pulled around 29-31 mpg easily.

There are lots of things to look at:

o2 sensor,
Dirty air filter,
dirty fuel injectors,
dirty TB,
dirty IMRC,
how much unnecessary weight you have in your car, depending on their size, subwoofer boxes will kill your mpg for sure.

but the one thing that can beat all of that is your lead foot.

Winter-blend gas is coming out guys. ...and the gas you get out there probably sucks too.

I average between 350-400 miles till the light comes on. Super long trips I get near 475 miles on about 15.5 gallons.

I get 220-240 all the time if I just do city driving b4 and after mods. If I do any highway driving it jumps up to 240+. Don't worry about it.

That's because you drive around in D1.

It's not uncommon for me to get 15 mpg city, but I still average about 26 mog on the highway.

I'm just saying that if your power feels normal and you are not seeing/feeling any symptoms then I am thinking that your car is running fine, and many others have similar mileage when driving strictly in the city. If you hit the freeway normally, you would see 300+ mpt. You cannot compare your mpt with others from other states, driving habits, diff. gas, and climates etc... Next time you take your car on the freeway for a long drive and barely hit the city streets on the same tank, I bet your mpt will be at least 300+. If it doesn't, then maybe you got a problem. When you filled up the last time you only got 220 mpt, how many gallons went in? I'm assuming it was closer to 14 gallons (when your light turns on) which means you had three more gallons to go which would bring you above 260+.
