oil filter replacement frequency question
I'm going to change to synthetic in the next oil change. My question is can I go 6 - 7k miles on a oem oil filter? 50% of that mileage will most likely by highway anyways. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Blown is Best
You should be fine with what you're describing. Standard interval is 7500 miles anyways. With Synthetic and 50% highway, you should be good through the full 7500.

Yes you can.
It may sound scary, but in my Prelude I ran mobil1 and OEM S2k filter for 10k. Yes, thats right, 10k. Mobil1 has been proven to last surprizingly well up to that interval with some refreshment/top off.
I did this for 30k miles highway/street mixed, without filter and/or engine issues.
In general you should replace the filter every time you do an oil change. I plan on running this mobil1 in my CL-S for 8k.
I actually changed my oil this sunday. This was my first sny change too; Mobil 1 5w20 w/ their filter. I love the filter/drain bolt location Its so damn easy. Took me 30mins!

Any REAL need to go to a dealer for the oil change or DYI the same? I was once told that Honda includes more detergent agents in the oil so its better for the engine. Is this a load?
I would rather do it myself, but--someone help a newbie out!

No there is no real need and yes the "honda oil" thing was a load of bull.
Honda doesnt make oil, they just buy it, throw the label on and "recommend" all honda stuff for your car. Same with spark plugs, wires, etc.
I would highly reccommend you do it yourself. Mainly because of the filter and drain bolt locaiton. Take the passangers side front wheel off, the filter is looking right at you (quite out of character for honda's motor design)! The drain bolt is right under the oil pan, on that side too.
Filter is just as important as the oil. I would recommend running Mobil1 with either an OEM, mobil1 or K&N folter. The OEM is around 7.xx and the Mobil1 or K&N are around 14.xx. Both excellent alternatives.
Go buy 5 quarts of (walmart sells the 5 gallon container) and have fun.

No need to do a flush, as you do with the radiator/coolant replancment. The oil pump does all of the circulation when you start the car.
NEVER put anything inside your motor besides the oil. Nothing....

As I mentioned above, go with Mobil1 5w20.
5w20 is not as common as 5w30 and the like, but def make sure you get it. You might have to end up buying 5 1qt bottles vs the 5 gallon.

I live in ohio and use Castrol 5W 30 always (year round). I don't see the need for synthetic oil if you change your oil and filter every 3-4K miles your engine should last forever......
FYI I have been told never to mix oil viscosities unless you are doing it after draining out all the old oil.
Word out.

But from what I have seen and experienced over the years with honda 4cyl's (run hotter than bigger liter motors), there is no need to run thicker oil unless you live on the Sun. Especially if you are running syn.
You can easily research in-depth the beni's of synthetic vs conventional. This is quite the age old battle.
Motor oil tests/studies have proved that synthetic cause less wear/scaring on your engine internals, keeps engine ops. temps lower, easier cold starts (as does thiner oil generally), preserves seals longer, keeps sludge from building up, etc, etc.
Nevermind that you can run the oil longer. Most run syn. for 6-8k. That alone is worth the extra money for syn. Read my first post.

The 01 CL's were 5W-30. so that would be right for his car. It was the 02's that spec 5W-20. In any event it really doesn't matter since no change was done to the engine. It was just to meet government mandated specs for CAFE. Mobile 1 oil is probably the way to go. some use Redline with good results. I use Amsoil 0W-30. For regular dino oil Chevron Supreme 5W-30 is good. A lot more information on the web, on this oil stuff on Bobistheoilguy.
But your original question was about oil filters, So Wix makes a good filter that will last as long as you want, also Mobile 1, Amsoil and Pureone filters are all considered good for that duration.
