really? before 1000? but i thought that the oil shouldn't be changed too early so that the engine has a proper chance to break in? that's just what i heard...maybe i'm wrong....mattg when did you change ur engine oil for the first time?

I purchased my car w/ 8400 mi. from the orig. owner. He had changed the oil @ around 2000 mi. If you wanna change your oil @ 1k your not going to hurt anything, if you wait til 3k that's fine too. After that I would recommend changing every 3k mi. At 10k I switched to synthetic. I do my own oil changes so it's affordable and I know it's done right. It's very easy to change the oil on a cl-s. Oh yeah, I also use genuine acura oil filters, they are available through your dealer. I'm sure some other brands are fine but a reliable source said stick to genuine filters.

I am going to be flamed here...

I had a new 98 Accord and now the CL-S. Per two people from the dealership, the oil the car comes with contains an additive to help in breaking in the engine.

If you drive the car as normal, first change is at 7,500 miles. Both service managers advised against changing the oil out before the 7,500 mile mark..

But it is your car, so it is entirely your choice when it comes down to it..

We've already had this discussion eggplant, but you will see no flames from me. There is no way that an early change could hurt the car though. Please, don't ever wait 7500 mi to change your oil. That's something a car lover should/would never do. Peace my cl.com bro's, except cakennedy. Fuck you cakennedy. :sqntfawk:

Honda of america told me NOT to use mobil 1 for my 1st and 2nd oil change and to start using it starting my 3rd. And once I go synthetic its good to use sythentic for the entire life of the car.

1st change 1750 facotry oil
2nd 4500 factory oil
3rd 7500 Mobil 1.
4th 15000 Mobil 1
5th 22500 Mobil 1
Planing on changing oil at 30k.

I change my Mobile One every 7500, and I drive Normaly.
There is no benefit changing oil more often than recomended, especially if you are using synthetic oil.
And before switching to synthetic, I would wait 10K miles to let the car completly break in.... Synthetics are slipery, and will not allow engine pistols complete break in.

Go read some info. on that, this topic has been bitten to death ....

Change your oil according to the manual (3,750 or 7,500 depending on driving conditions). Honda does indeed use oil with additives to help the enging break in. Honda does employ people who analyze engine wear and oils. I have never (before one comment above) heard that is was not OK to switch to Mobil 1 or any other synthetic beginning with the first oil change. I use Mobile 1 and change it at 10,000 miles after an intitial change at 7,500 miles. YMMV

Someone gave a good website on Info. about oils... I forgot the name, you could do a search.

I read that Synthetics should not be put imeadetly, 10K miles was an approximate number they came out with.... all they mentioned, is that you should not switch to synthetics imeadetly... Your engine needs to be break in before you put synthetics....

Here they are, more info on synthetic than you will ever read;

http://www.seansa4page.com/resource/autotech.html

Also here's some mind opening info on filters;

http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml note American Honda filter's "suck" Mobil1 $9.99, STP $2.88, are exactly the same made by the same manufacture

I use Amsoil (oil 5w30 + filter) because I can't find any test data that beats it.

There's a board member here (ROADRAGE) that likes Redline, Mobil1 is good if you need a known brand name for personel comfort.

Synthetic's are very very good, read test data at www.amsoil.com

This was thought to be the case years ago when tolerances were a bit wider. But today the fit is much better and held more constant with tighter tolerances negating the need for 'break in' as it was before. Everything seats fine within the first 500 miles so going to synthetic at the first oil change will not affect the engine.

Here is one person that has also heard that the original oil contains an additive...

It is still true today, complete break in never happens in 500 miles, 500 miles is only enough for most part of the break in... engine breaks in completly after few thousand miles ...

The engine is always breaking in, there will always be wear. But in current engines the seating of the rings, etc. occurs quickly. The rest is just normal wear...

For that matter, I'm at 35K and I JUST switched to Mobil1 Synthetic. I'll see what kinds of changes this includes as I compare previous performance with the current.

If it's free stay with it. Quaker State is a top grade motor oil.

I also use Purolator PureOne PL14459 oil filter. A well made oil filter with good filtration and oil flow. After 12 K miles will switch to Mobil 1 5W-30.

I was wondering the same thing.
I can't even find a 5w-20 motor oil anywhere.

I keep meaning to call the dealer & ask what they use.

I only have 1700mi but I figure after 3750mi & 7500mi I'm going
to synthetic.

I run mobile 1 with a K&N filter. A bit more expensive now but soon I'll be doing my own changes (when i get a house) so it will be much better. I change at about 5-6000.
I beleive my manual says to change the oil every 5,000 or so normally. So I figure I'm good.
