oil

I have a 03 cl-s auto, I just did my 3rd oil change, but used synthetic oil, 5w-40. The brand was VOHL german oil or something.

Is 5w-40 ok for our cars, cuz I know the manual recommends 5w-20.

And has anyone heard of this brand, how is it?

From what I've read you should stay away from anything over 5W30.10W30 maybe OK in warm climates;but, 5W40 must have a load of viscosity enhancers to have such a wide range. At some point these enhancers cause problems. I would say use 5W30 even if the maunual says 5W20. Too Thin. They changed it in 2002 or 2003 for a minimal gain in gas mileage not protection. Do a search: There are numerous threads on this issue.

My 03 says 5w-20 in the book, & on the oil cap.

My 2001 recommends 5W30--SAm engine--The only reason Acura changed is for fuel economy not protection IMHO.

I don't know.. I think that 5w-40 is a little too high. I wouldn't do anything over 5w-30 in this car.

Either 5w-20 or 5w-30 would be fine. Many people run 5w-30 in the summer and 5w-20 during the winter.

the 5w-40 oil seems too thick, i dont know if im trippin or wat, but i feel a lag. so i guess i just wasted 45 bucks, now i gotta go drain it and prob pour some mobil1 5w-30 since theres so much recommendation for it.

5w-40 oil is pretty thick... probably too thick for the engine... especially since Acura changed the recommendation from 5w-30 to 5w20 (even though both are OK as mentioned above)....

You should not experiance any problems running 5W40. I wouldn't waste $25 (or what ever) to replace it. YMMV

5W40 is okay, specially if you live a very hot climate such as Laredo, TX and Southern states as New Mexico and Arizona. Fricking 5W20 is to thin and seem to no give the adequate protection to the engine. I prefer to lose some mpg over longevity of the engine. If you are using synthetics 10w-30 are also okay.

it's synthetic 5w-40, the mechanic says it runs a little thinner then normal oil so yea maybe i'll leave it for awhile since its gonna get hot soon anyway.
