Now own TL-S too

I bought the Wife one for her Bday/Christmas. Pearl White; awesome looking car.

It looks like it has a subwoofer mounted in the center of the rear deck; very sweet.

Now we are a 2 Acura family!

Congratulations!!!
We did the same about a month ago.
This is one of my carefully planned steps so she'll let me get my 2000 M5 this Spring when the prices are down to $55k for a low mileage one.

He would also need an NSX to have a full acura Family. The RL is not the black sheep of Acura, it is actually the first car they made but was called the Vigor back in 1986. Acura has one of the best full line of cars out of everyone else. Where else can you get almost any type of car you want that beats the compitition.

the rl is the legend (still called 'legend' in other markets, too) and the name changed in 1995.

the vigor was only around 1992-1994 (and the 1st gen tl replaced it for 1995).

Thanks all. BTW, the interior is Parchment. The car has a definite look of elegance to it while hiding its sinister nature.

Then why the heck are the legends 2 door and 4 door and the RL doesn't come in 2 door. And the vigor only comes in 4 door from what I has seen. Then Acura might have done a switch around on the models.

The 2.5 was the base TL for a couple years, it had a 5 cylinder egine and was quite coarse. Here's a pic:

It looks the same as other '95-98 TL's.

Yes, the Vigor was the mid-market attempt by acura...4 door, 5 cylinder, and very low sales. Once 1995 hit, they ditched the poor selling Vigor (since it was too small inside for that market segment) and replaced it with the 2.5 TL, and rolled out the flagship RL as well.

Interesting evolution from 1992-1998, even, including the introduction of the CL.

Where did they get the 5 cylinder engine from. And on the old legends from 1991 where did they get the v6 from, I thought Honda/Acura didn't make one till later.

The Legend was Acura's RL until 1995. It just came in Coupe form also...( before 1995 there was no acura coupe except the Legend)... The Vigor because of it's 2.5 5 cylinder engine is now known as the TL 2.5(96-98). The TL 3.2(96-98) is the "Baby Legend" As I like to call it.. Because of the 3.2 liter V6...

To my knowledge, the 5 cylinder was a home-grown engine (probably modular in some fashion from their 4 cylinders). The V6 was always Honda/Acura made, but only for the Acura line. When the Acura name first came out, they wanted a CLEAR distinction of brand and class of car from Honda. Hence why the V6 took so long to come over to the Accord.

The V6 has been around ever since the Legend.

Then if the v6 was out long ago why didn't they put it in the tl back in 1995. And why the hell did honda put an isuzu v6 in the passport and not an acura v6.

Good question. I'm not sure why they held out on the V6, except that the RL got it. At the time, V6's were still not real common for cars in the TL class...they were getting more popular, but not industry standard yet. It did take Acura awhile to be competitive in that space again.

As far as the Passport, well, Honda doesn't do anything to that vehicle except put its own badges on it. Too expensive to retrofit that V6. Too bad, though...Honda makes a great V6 in my opinion.

I think honda/acura had the attitude that they could make the car do what it needed to do and meet the needs of most of their customers with a cheaper, less complex (from a manufacturing perspective) inline motor rather than a v motor. really, this is the same attitude they displayed with the accord before they finally started installing the v6s.

as for the tl, they probably settled on the 5 cylinder because an inline 6 would have been too long and a 4 cylinder wouldn't have been as torquey and would have had a perception problem (4 bangers are frequently seen as economy engines).
