A note about the RE730s

I have had the Bridgestone RE730s on my car for just over 15,000 miles now. The RE730s were GREAT for the first 10,000 miles, but once I surpassed that mark they quickly started to degrade in ride quality. If you are looking for a long-term tire, these are probably not your best bet as mine are just about gone. I'm only 1/16th of an inch away from the wear bars and my front driver's side is starting to chunk on the outside edge. I'm purely stock, so neither sways nor springs can be attributed to what I consider a bit premature wear.

Just thought you'd like to know. I believe that JZ has mirrored these sentiments as well if I recall. I'm glad to be trading the car in this week and not having to go through replacing them.

Well, that's is, in fact, almost the exact scenario that I encountered. Those things got damn noisy toward the end or their life and my tread was completely gone at 20k.

While they lasted, however, those babies stuck like glue.

I think p7000SS are the answer....I have over 45,000 km's on mine and they have lots of tread, stick like molasses and are quiet

Doesnt matter...it all comes down to how you drive them...given the fact that I peel out and floor it everywhere...15K isn't too bad...

This might be the key. droideka Did you rotate the tires? I have 5k on them and they still look like new. My car has springs and sways and my daily commute is 50 miles crusing 65-75 mph. Next week I start a 90 mile commute so the miles will be adding up. Hope to get 30k out of the re730's.

Where does everyone buy tires?

A local shop has had some bad experiences with tires from Tirerack. Tires are difficult to keep balanced, poor wear and performance. Like the tires are past their expiration date.

Other times, the tires are great.

How much can age and storage affect new tires?

I simply can't imagin that you will get 30K out of a set of potenzas.

They seemed to wear slowly for like the first 5-7K and then they wore exponentially faster as the miles piled on.

By the end of my first or second rotation (at 7500mile intervals) the road noise started

True...i believe you about that...but I find it hard to get 30K out of any tire...you have to remember when people say you're gonna get 'x' amount of miles out of a tire....it means regular tire rotation....35 psi...checked every month.....and driving at 65mph on super smooth freeways...and no hard braking....a peel out probably takes off close to 1K of treadlife.

They "worked" a trade-off to get the high mileage rating. The RE-71s were not quite as bad (in the end-of-life hardness department). The RE-730s are notorious for the hard ride at the end-of-life. If you like the tires, toss 'em when they get hard...

Everyone has a different approach to get "high-mileage" out of performance tires. The RE-730s have some pretty hard rubber at the end-of-life; it does help to reduce "squirm" when the tires are new.

I hope there is not a bunch of people expecting to "burn" around corners on max- and high-performance tires and get 30K miles of life…

Even with high-silica content and long chain carbon compounds, a great 3-season tire will probably only get 15K to 25K max life (depending on road surface and driving style).

I can find you some 80,000 mile tires. They wont stick worth a $hit and you will hate the ride, but they will crack (from ozone and time issues) before the tread wears out. (You have to want that "ice rink feel" to really appreciate them...)

I would caution people to not put too much stock in the word of one tire dealer. Tire compounds are composed of a blend of compounds and the process is generally well controlled. There are times when the process will go awry; the problems are probably more common to particular makes and brands of tires.

I did mention how I got a "recommended" 500-mile trial tire from a tire dealer (some years back) and the tire's tread was made from "release compound" (sorry, no real compound on this baby). The tire dealers told me the tires needed breaking in to stick well, but after about two weeks all of the tread was gone. The tires felt like I was on an ice rink; the folks who made the tire didn't check them very well.

Ozone and smog will really mess with tires (newer tires are better than the tires they made a decade ago)...

BTW – Tire Rack sells a lot of tires, so the stock should be “fresher” than a lot of places were the tires sit on the shelf for years. (If you’re talking about some discontinued and hard-to-get tire that is something else. Check out the stock in some of the local tire dealers and gas stations some time – I’ve seen some pretty stale stuff sitting around!)

You bet I did! At the 7,500 mile mark too. I was also VERY FANATICAL about tire pressures as well. Checked it every other day and maintained 34 in the front and 32 in the rear.

Maybe those 100mph+ rips down the Tollway five days a week contributed to excessive wear.

YIKES, 100 mph daily. What do you do for fun, 150mph on the weekends. I guess I better plan on paying $650 for tires every 7 months Shiiiittttttt So trading the car in; what on the plate for new wheels?

After your z comes, your wife will be pregnet and then comes the minivan. I looked at o6 vetts but needed a back seat. And besides I don't have any gold chains and pinky rings. My wife actually likes the new Z. Shhhiiiittt no way I'm driving the minivan everyday.

I keep my RE730's at 40psi. My fronts wear down much quicker because of the aggressive driving, but the rear tires looked damn near brand new when I rotated them up front.

The wet weather traction of the RE730's is definately impressive!
