Well ive been driving the car for two weeks now, and this clutch is just not comfortable. I dont enjoy the dual mass fly wheel and i dont enjoy double clutching.

Its fine if i wanna get on it and go - but to make this car transition with any amount of smoothness during normal driving is just getting too uncomfortable. Add to the fact that i drive a different (5 spd) car here and there and jumping back into the CL is just getting to be too much.

Before anyone starts with the "this is the BEST gearbox ever, your crazy and dont know how to drive talk" - Ive been driving manual for 8 years... Everything from civics and accords to porsches, corvettes and throw in a right hand drive skyline r33.

Just the other week i was driving my cousins 350z and i couldnt help but envy how smooth i could make that car shift - now i know its a different animal, but when he hopped in my car even he commented on how annoying the sweet spot is on the cl.

Ive read through pages of posts of people stating my same disappointment, but i havent come across a real "fix" --- all ive found is complications with the clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel when people have gone and tried to remedy their problem by swapping in aftermarket parts...

Is their any route that i can take???

 

Why are you double clutching?

 

It takes much more than two weeks to master the clutch in the CL. What more do you want someone to say

Ive been driving my CL6 for 4 years now and here and there the shift won't be as smooth as I want it to be, but for the most part you can't tell im shifting. The clutch in the CL isn't as bad as you make it sound. If you want to drive a car with a horrible clutch then you should have driven my Honda CRX. I just about sold that thing the first month I had it

shit i just put a new clutch and flywheel in mines the other day and its a day and night difference from when I bought the car a year ago. Im basically learning how to drive the car all over again. BE PATIENT

 

Are you able to shift quicker? I would like to know what exactly is so different b/c i am seriously thinking about swapping out for some other part to adjust the problem...

 

takes some getting used to, but its all about leg control and low rpms. Give it a little more time.

 

Yeah, i had the worst experience NEW YEARS EVE with my new 6speed driving through traffic trying to find parking and all that in Baltimore city so i know your troubles..i fel overwhelmed and i wanted an auto even though it was slower and not as muc potentail....But like they said above i was just patient and i can into it naturally like a 2nd nature type thing and i can drive in traffic now like its an auto and not evenrealize it...I LOVE THE STANDARD TRANSMISSION so much control. my 2 cents.

How many miles on your 6spd ?? I know that most clutch/gearboxes will act "funky" when they are at the end of their servicable life...

I've had mine for 4 1/2 years and 62K miles... It's fine.... and I even still have the original gear oil in mine and not the reformulated stuff

Like CLS6SpeedNupe mentioned, a new clutch will definitely improve the shift quality over a well worn one...

I figured after my test drive on a CL-S6 it'd take me a LONG time before I got the hang of it, usually when I test drive manuals it takes me about one block to get used to the clutch but the CL is the exception, I like the clutch and it's my second fave clutch so far (integra is my fave) but i figure i'd have to own one and drive it everyday before I get used to it.

 

yea I can shift way quicker. The problem is more wit me learning the new coordination. Wit the new clutch it engages higher than the old worn one where I had to go lower so with me not used to this right now my shifts are jerky but im doing a lot of in town stop and go driving right now to get used to it. I mean this clutch job cost me total like $1158...a lot of cash. I cant honestly say it was woth it ONLY because as many of you have read in other treads i burnt up my old clutch like 2 hours at the track after installing the intake header and crank pulley which never had a chance to break in and feel the difference. So these past 2 days been the first days in like 3 weeks since i been on the car hard and its just a monster but I keep having to remind myself its not perform as good as it is because of the new clutch but because of the mods I installed on it last month that im now feeling the difference. Any how there is honestly no way around it clutch low performance...if its bad you got to change it, lol sucks that it cost but its something that we all accepted when we bought our 6 Speeds over an auto.

No need to be double clutching. Also if you don't like the dual-mass flywheel you're pretty fucked because just about every manufacturer is switching from a solid disk to a dual-mass unit.

 

speaking of Flywheels, anyone wanna buy my old one? its in good condition. I just didnt keep it because I didnt feel like dealing wit shipping the old one back cross country and waiting for a refund.

 

double clutching to give the engine a bit of time to slow down, i have a fear of riding the clutch for any amount of time more than what should be necessary - i like to shift quickly, but when i do i have to ride and ease off the clutch extremely slow to make the transition smoothly, near slower than any other car ive driven.

Like i said, when im pushing it, it feels great- but my everyday driving style is a bit more relaxed.

The 6mt deff takes some getting use to. iI remember i considered getting rid of the car when i first got it cause the clutch was annoying. Its also very bad for stop-go traffic to this day. Just give it some time and you will be shifting it nice and smoooooth

The only shift that isn't smooth is the 1st to 2nd.

With a dual-mass flywheel there is absolutely zero reason to be double clutching. This isn't a 6-ton dump trunk you're driving.

when i put the stage 3 clutch in the integra i had the hardest time not chirping or jerking at take off but i took me about a week of heavy driving and shifiting to get the clutch to break in the way i wanted it also the light weight fly wheel is so much nicer than the stock one i had on there first. the bite on a new clutch is awsome. also just sit there with the car in gear and just move the clutch pedal up to see were the sweet spot it, once you have that figured out you should be fine.

 

I double clutch every time I downshift (unless I'm downshifting for compression/engine braking). I like to rev match if I'm downshifting for power.

 

There's no need to double clutch when rev matching either.

Clutch in > Start to change gear > Rev > Engage gear > Clutch out.

I do it dozens of times each time I drive the car.

My car doesnt pull and the clucth goes up really slow.. My car has like 140hps now..

I had an opportunity to drive the 6spd and had no problems in my 15 minutes of driving on local streets and the highway. So, maybe it's just what car background you come from?

i have driven many manual cars and this is by far the hardest.


but to be honest, ill take advantage of that.


remember how fun it was when you first started learning stick? then it got dull and boring after you got it down? well i figure this will be more fun since it takes more learning time.

ok so i test drove another cls6 today, he said clutch was replaced before he bought it (2 years)

i drove it and it was really easy to drive.

so like someone stated. its the life of the clutch.

 

Yep when I first got my swap done the clutch and flywheel were brand new and the clutch pedal felt stiff but I loved it never stalled it since we had a 6spd that was donated to my high school, yeah I know... that poor 6spd, no one ever appreciated it besides me.

Now the clutch is much softer which isn't bad or good, just saying the way it is.

As for smooth shifts I just slow my shifts down a little and wait for the revs to drop down a little more so the synchros don't have to work as hard.
