When I turn the key in the ignition to the second click (right before you have to use a little more force to actually start the car) I hear a pronounced "whirl"/click sound coming from the engine bay...any ideas to what this might be? Hopefully its normal...

 

its the fuel pump its normal

I dont believe its the fuel pump but rather the fuel primer that sits just above the rear fuel rail.

 

whatever it is, its normal and no one needs to worry about that sound.

Probably the fuel pump prime. Have it checked out to know for sure if you really want to know. We can’t give you concrete diagnosis of your car from over the web. The fuel pump does not click. It has a slight steady whine/hum for about 1-2 seconds.
