No one willing to do a real fog conversion of us??

OK I did a search on-line, and was surprised to find out that no one has even considered or thought of a 'real' fog lamp solution for us.

I would be more than willing to make the conversion (and absolutely guranteed to, if it was HID!!!! )

Has anyone researched what it would cost to make a solution for us? I don't want to necessarily be ghetto and just cut out a little hole in the back of my fog lamp and cram a aftermarket PIAA, or Catz unit into it :o

SO I guess I will post a poll, and hopefully i'm not the only one that is nuts about this prospect. I figure this would save alot in the long run in terms of replacement housings (because your M6 or Piaa burn a whole through the top of the housing!! Which it looks like mine is about to do).

As I mentioned in another thread: How to install 2002 CLS fogs on 2003 CLS and what Tom2 suggested, the 2003 CLS fake vents used in place of the 2001/2002 fogs would make a good mounting plate for real fogs. With a little care and patience, these fake vents could be modified to receive mini Hella fog lights. I'd install a remote (wireless) switch, control relay(s) and inline fuses. But this might a bit pricey. However, it's probably the cleanest way to do the install - not having tearing up the dash to route wires.

But I'm rather pleased with the 2003 CLS mod I did using the 2002 fogs/running lights. It turns out that the 2002 fog light lens is clear, not defused like the 2001 was. After installing these 2002 fogs with the PIAA bulbs, I noticed that the 5 or 6 foot of road between the bumper and where the headlights start to illuminate the road brightly is now filled in with more illumination by these 2002 fogs. Something I didn't expect and didn't see with the 2001 fogs. So I don't think it was a total waste of money or time. Besides, the CLS just looks better with these lights in place and they do serve a little bit of functional light now. In addition, they also make the car more visible at night in other people's side view mirrors. Granted, they are not real fogs in the true sense.

the micro hella kit isn't HID. I thought it's a standard H3 bulb. well that's what i read on the hellausa.com site as well as many other sources.

most foglights that are HID run a hell of a lot more than $130 bucks which is the price of the hella kit.

i was looking into the Raybrig Type 200 kit which is a HID lighting system. except it runs about $1k

http://www.raybrigusa.com/html/hid_s...l#hid-type-200

it may fit in our road lamp location, but i don't know if it does.

What is the part/model number for the Hella micros you used? Also, what type of switch, relay, fuse and wiring did you use?

thanks,

I know someone on here had an HID foglight conversion done to their roadlamps and posted pics. Try a search. I believe they used the stock housings too. I also saw this done to a CL one night here in Miami, but was driving around and couldn't get any info from the guy.

Damn...

Damn we need some info, I don't have the first inkling of where to start (I am willing to do the leg work, and research to see how much this would cost for me..then possibly for a mass production run).

Starting out, I figure a bodyshop would probably be the best place to start, but then where from this point (or in place of this point)??

-I actually like the custom enclosure so I wanted to roughly stick with that design somewhat.

Anyone have any pointers, or links for these folks that may do this custom work??

I don't recall the thread for the person who did the HID conversion, but if anyone has a link to it, or something similar please post it.

ST2000,

Those Hellas look great! That's exactly what I had in mind when I mentioned putting the Micros in that spot.

I didn't know anyone had already done it though....

I tried looking for the old thread for a while, but couldn't find it. I think it may have been lost when the site was switching servers.

Check out the information about the Raybrig HID Type 200 lights on their web site. They grossly misspelled words in their ad: "... High >>>clasy<<< Titanium compact >>>shpae<<< with full >>>fuction<<< of HID, compact design to fit many types of car ..." I misspell words all the time. But this makes me a bit reluctant to buy from a company who looks so very unprofessional. Especially at these prices. (IMHO)

I saw that too, unfortunately though, since raybrig is based from japan, i have a feeling that some kid over there designed this site and didn't take an english class.

st2000, how easy/difficult was teh install of the micros? did you have to cut part of the bumper cover or roadlamp mounts? how well do they fit?

i´ve been looking for a set of lights that fit well and i think your install looks good.

Yep, that's the sucker right there. They're micro alright. Model is Hella Micro DE, but kinda tricky to fit them in those vents though. I hardwired them with the lowbeams, so i wouldn't have to bother with the switch, it takes away the clean look in the side dash. IMO.

I have the micro de behind my gutterguard mesh. Looks OK. A vented cover like ST2000 is the way to go....don't want to lose my FAKE cold air induction.

If someone can drawup a good design (for 2001-2003 CLs), I have a friend that works with plastics and acrylics and prototype something.

I was thinking if we could do something to integrate our current fogs (or something like it) to the Hella Mico DE's would be a start. We basically need to figure out depth of the Micro DE's, and the width (Dept being more important I think so there is no obstructions). Just a couple of ideas to get started.

Hella micros are relatively small from the front but it's rather long like about 5". That's what making it hard to install because there are bumper pillars right behind them. One of the reasons i put thr grill around the fogs was to protect my intake filter from street debris and hey more cool air flowing through, but water and dust are no good.

That's what I was afraid of, the housing looked pretty deep, wonder much much deeper the housing is for the HID version.

I would loev to use the stock housing (probably with much modification though) and use the reflective housing to possibly help the beam out somehwhat.

This is a good start, unfortunately I wouldn't know where to start in writing up a design on this sucker? Anyone with some experience care to chime in?

Or just do the HID conversion like I did. The road lamps are as bright as the HID in the headlights if not brighter I have pics.

JSuppi - someone recently cut the roadlamps and put the fogs thru the hole. It looked like a good install. The only problem I have with that is a heavy fog light might vibrate and give a strobbing effect while driving down the road.

If it's been asked before, sorry. I wonder if the 03's vent covers for the roadlamps will fit an 01's. Then I can play with just making a cover like ST2000.

ST2000, how did you make you vent covers. Can u take a close-up?? TIA.

yes the covers fit, the problem I see is making a fog, even as small as Hella's fit well.

I agree, there would definetly haveto be some type of reinforcement of some type to prevent the unexpected & undesired repointing of the fogs.

lou, exactly how did you have the conversion done? Those are the stock housings correct? What was done to them to withstand the added heat? Also, about how much did you spend?

friend of mine did the install he specializes in converting older Civics 97'and up to HIDs. He says that HID run cooler than regular bulbs so heat is not the problem. I do believe he had to take the road lamps apart to line it with something. He used this kit with the H3 it just came out everything cost a little less than $400 didn't pay for install tho.

oh and u don't have to worry about fogging up cause the road lamps has a hose sticking out through the back to let out all the condensation. Look awesome tho that pic doesn't do it justice
