This Newbie's About to Buy a SMR 6-Speed!

Gonna ink the contract this afternoon on a 2003 San Marino Red over Parchment 6-Speed CL Type-S. Dang, that thing is fast!

I'm so glad I found your forum, reading the posts here has been really helpful. I didn't find a specific FAQ for "what to look for when buying," so I'd appreciate it if you could tell me what I should consider before pulling the trigger on this.

Since it's a 6-speed, I don't have the tranny worries. Anything else to check for? I've read the CarFax and it looks cool.

Oh, does this have a timing belt or chain? Any big maintainence items I should budget for? With 40k on the clock, it's still got another 10k on the warranty.

I've got 39K on my SMR 6-speed and it has not needed anything but ordinary maintenance. An absolutely reliable car that handles now the same as it did when I first got it.

There are no factory recalls for it so the only thing I would worry about when you make your purchase is how the previous owner took care of it (you should be able to tell with close inspection of details--paint, dents, interior condition, noises and rattles when driving it, does it track straight, respond gingerly to input from the steering wheel, etc.--there should be NO noises or rattles for example).

Good luck....

Congrats. Love the 6 speeds, I've had 2.
Just the brakes for shimmy and warped rotors and look closely for any paint work and to see if any parts are not original. Love the red! esp. with the black interior, but that would be near impossible to find with a 6 speed.
It'd be great if you get detailed maintenance records but if you can't tell for certain, first thing I would do is change the fluids, at least oil and tranny and check air filter.
good luck and have fun..

The 6 speed trans doesn't like the cold weather. So take it easy for the first 5-10 minute of driving and you good to go

There is this one and you will want to make sure it has been done if the VIN falls into the effected range.

ChadT, thanks for the heads-up. I just looked it up, and found that it's already been performed.

Congrats, and welcome. You have til 100K for the tranny, but I would look into getting an extended warrenty for your baby. It's about $1300, but it's probably going to be worth it in the long run. I've had a lot of crap replaced under the current warrenty, and the thing about parts for our car is that it's expensive. If you're getting your car from a dealer, ask if they can cut you a deal. You can also check out www.curryacuracare.com.

Have fun. Post pics, and look into making it faster.

I have 69k miles on my CLS 6mt and have only gone through tires and a set of rotors/pads. I did have my belts replaced for my 60k miles service due to some glazing, but it had been squealing since day one, but not a problem now.

There's no 100k for the tranny on a CL-S 6speed. Like Tulanian said there's no tranny problems with the 6 speed, so no worries.

Good luck with the car! SMR is a great color.

Where in VA are you from? Once it gets warmer we'll probably be having some meets in the DC Metro area.. Check the Meet & Greet forum for info and come out and join us!

Congrats and great choice in car. Your car does have a timing belt and there is a recall on the timing belt tensioner and possibly the water pump based on a range of VINs. Mine needed the timing belt tensioner replaced but not the water pump. You can do a search if you need details.

If you plan to do mods, this is what I recommend:

1) CT springs/sways/strutbar and Konis.
2) CT Intake and Exhaust
3) BBK
4) Wheels/tires
5) CT S/C

But, I'll go headers before exhaust.

SMR 6 speed is more rare itself. The SMR/Ebony is rare, the most rare is the Taf White/Ebony/Navi.

'wildly estimated 6 SPEED stats' from previous posts-
ALL 6 speeds = 2700 to 3200? conflicting data
6 speeds w/Navi = 788

Red 6 speeds = 588
Red/Parchment 6Sp = 249, w/Navi = 61
Red/Ebony 6Sp = 254, w/Navi = 24

Rarest - White/Ebony 6 sp, Navi = 12

6 Speed Color #'s
Silver = 986
Black = 957
Red = 588
Anthracite = 572
Blue = 296
White = 244

These are wild estimates, no data ever released by Acura. I think these totals are too high. Where can we try to get the info from Acura?
About 1 in 4 6Speeds had Navi.

Picked up my new baby last night, and I am enjoying my sweet new ride. It's a little bit faster than the Nissan Sentra SE-R "classic" that I gave up!

Showing it to some guys at work this AM, one said: "let me hear the sound system!" So I put it in neutral and revved it up to 6900 RPM.

No navi on my car, but that is its only shortcoming.

Oh, much kudos to RaviNJCLs for the link to the extended warranty page. By bringing a printout of the price at www.curryacuracare.com the dealer knocked his price of an extended warranty from $1560 to $1000. Sure, I'm geezin, but this old dealer was clearly rattled that in this Brave New Internet World he had to compete with web page quotes, and he was shocked to have an informed customer across the desk! He he.

I'll post some pics when I can.

Mr. Slimey wrote a nice letter to Acura about that, and they replied saying that they don't release "proprietary" info like that.

HohLake finished "scrubbing" the CLS info from Acura's owners link site, and has updated results here:

You might want to review HohLake's detailed analysis before making the "wildly estimated" claim. He's just posted (today) the detailed version of his data scrubbing...

I looked up my prod number (8866) and damn, it's correctly listed as a SMR non-navi 6spd. Until alot of members can prove that Hohlake's numbers are wrong, I'm going to say it's accurate.

FWIW - my VIN last four shows up correctly on HohLake's listing.

Tulanian -- nice car, enjoy! I didn't understand this:

You can only rev to the mid-5000 range in neutral before hitting the fuel/spark cutoff limiter.

Sorry to cause confusion. I was obviously drunk with delirium at the time.

I just posted pix in the gallery, if anyone is interested.
