new kind of problem on 6 speed... Gurus, chime in please!

so just started today, but it ticks in second gear and second gear only. It's louder but not loud and is speed dependant..

Ideas?

new development: now ticking faintly in first and loud in second.
Kinda sounds to me like either the input or output shaft or maybe even the gears..

I wonder if it's an axle or CV joint? Is it constant with RPM or Speed?

negative.
I was wrong. Its RPM dependent and no longer gear dependent.

So I started "diagnosing" it. With the car in neutral, clutch in, it doesnt tick. With the clutch out, it ticks. This is with the car NOT MOVING.

Sounds like a bearing now. Any ideas?

I think I'm going to find a totaled CLS6 (lookin at one now that was crushed by a tree) and take the tranny from that. Part the rest of the car (Has factory navigation) and sell the parts.

Where is it coming from? Under the dash? Engine? Under the car?

Def from the tranny. Like I said, with the car stopped, the clutch in, it doesnt knock. With the clutch out, it knocks LOUD. Then with it in again, it slows down and you can hear everything slowing down in the tranny and the knock slowing also...

I'll be draining the fluid tomorrow to see if there is anything in it as far a metal shavings and chunks of stuff.
I will be buying that totaled CLS6 which happens to be black and going to be parting it of course.

Tranny is mine but the rest of the car is up for grabs.
Will be making a FS thread when I get the car and start parting it.

You know, I was expecting these kind of problems from the 14 year old Supra and not the 5 year old Acura...

LOL Oh well.. Just my luck I guess

They were replaced when the clutch was done...
The only reason I dont think its either of them is that it would only knock in second gear and then spread to first, reverse and a faint tick in 3-6 and even at a stand still with the clutch engaged..
Not only so, I can feel the knock through the shifter.. Very slight, but its there.

In one of your previous posts, you stated it didn't click with the clutch engaged. With that statement alone I predicted one of the two parts mentioned.

Now if it doesn't go away with the clutch engaged, then I don't know what it could be. From past experiences, it would go away with the clutch engaged. But I don't know if that still rules those parts out.

Did you do the install? Sometimes shops do get a little shady and reuse your parts if they think they don't need replacing...

When I did my clutch install, I forgot the put in the new pilot bearing. It's a honest mistake that could have occured. Just throwing that out there...

I'll ask to see if you should still hear the clicking even with the clutch engaged if it were to be the pilot or throw out bearing. (again, I forget which of the 2 click)

First off, i would like to thank you once again for your help
As for the clicking. It went from a faint click in second with the clutch engaged to a knock with it engaged. Was only in second gear until I started to drive back home at which point it spread to first as a tick and progressively got louder as I drove through the streets and stop signs to get home. Then all of a sudden it started to knock while sitting at a light with the clutch engaged with it being out of gear.

Now if I start it up, release the clutch, it will knock. Reverse knocks, first knocks, second knocks, third is silent, as is fourth, fifth, and sixth... But with the way and seed at which is "spread" from second to first to reverse and neutral, I would think that 3-6 will have the same problem IF i keep driving it (which I will not).

Either way, My plans are to buy that other totaled CLS6, swap the tranny, and drive MY car. Then part the other one and build the motor to a 3.5 with gasket matched heads along with the gasket matched runners that I have and the ported and polished IM and bored TB... Should be one interesting power plant when done... LOL

Sounds like transmission input shaft bearings, I've heard this twice over the years on my CRX and Integra, it will get worse and worse until you replace it.

It's a shame that the bearing is probably less than $40, but it will take over $400 labour to get to it since you have to drop the transmission (requires driveshaft removal), take it apart enough to change out the bearing and put it back.
