neuspeed short shifter results

I'm gonna be honest i'm not too fond of it. The shifting is stiffer and harder...the throw is a decent length...maybe i have to get used to that. It has easy slam-a-bility so i can rip through the gears but it takes more strength now because of the stiffness. But the little housing piece that says "type S 123456" hits the pivot point now due to the short shifter..its hard to explain...but i might have to take it out.

i really like the way it feels, so im def going to leave it in
here is my post from the other thread with my results and pics

Ok the short Shifter has been installed, it went really well, pretty straightforward instructions were well written by neuspeed, + i found my old drivers licence i thought id lost that had fallen back into the dash!
but i do have some pics for clarification and because the ones in the instructions were pretty small and black and white

HERE ARE ALL THE PARTS YOU GET FROM NEUSPEED

HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE LOCATION OF THE SCREWS AND CLIPS YOU NEED TO UNDO, SCREWS ARE BLUE AND YELLOW ARROWS, CLIPS ARE BLUE AND RED

HERE IS WHAT THE HOLE YOU DRILL SHOULD LOOK LIKE

HERE IT IS FINISHED

You should take pics and let the folks at Neuspeed know about this. Maybe they can alter the design and send you out a new one.

Well that sucks shit... Damn it, mine is sitting right here, UPS just got it here.... DAMN IT!!!...

Okay, let us know what Neuspeed says.. I am not touching it till I hear back from you guys.

Smitty

P.S. Double sided tape?... what is that going to do?.. stop it from hitting the plastic trim piece??... do you really want tape on something that is used so much as your shifter, that does not sound right..... Please specify what you mean.... Thanks

it doesnt hit the piece that hard, and it barely pops it up so i think some 3m foam 2sides adheasive tape may hold it down, i dont know i have to get a ride to the hardware store to buy some

ok so i went out and looked at it again and took some pics
This is the position the trim ring is supposed to be in the normal position, when you shift into the 1 3 5 gears it pops the ring out of place, but not enough for it to be noticeable in a picture because it pretty much goes right back down after your in gear

this picture is what i came up with, if you slide the trim ring up a little bit it no longer gets poped up or has any problems shifting through the entire grid, it doesnt bother me at all but i could see it bothering other people, it doesnt hang over in the front it just looks that way in the picture, i really like the way the shifter throws and its worth it to me to have it like this

Can you dremel the underside of it so it does not hit??? or will this be a noticable visual act when looking at the plastic shift plate from above?

i dont have a dremel, but i recomend you just put yours in and try it it takes all of 20min to install and your drilling one hole that you will never see otherwise its completely reversable if you dont like it or it doesnt work out for you

Dremel worked out great.... It was a fairly easy upgrade.. The throw is 30% shorter, no doubt..

Now as for the plastic piece that lifts up while in 1st,3rd or 5th you ask???... WELL... All you need is either a Dremel rotary tool or a straight edge razor knife.. Grind or trim some of the plastic off the back of the plate and that is it!!!.. it is that simple.. I had very minor rubbing issues so I only had to take off a little bit of plastic.. But there is alot to take if you desire... It looks real good and feels real good to... Follow the VERY simple NEUSPEED instructions that come with the kit and don't forget to pack around the shifter with damp cotton or towels while drilling. You don't want those metal shaving all over the place when your drilling...

^--- As you can see how Jakes plastic plate around his shifter sits forward.. After you dremel or cut the plastic out alittle so it does not touch, it will not lift the plate...

Smitty

Now these are pics of mine complete with the plate where it belongs and not moving..

Oh, that's not much dremel'ing at all. You guys got me worried?

How does it feel? RobG said that the shifting feels a little more stiffer & harder -- thoughts?

Awesome UPGRADE

I have to say, if you miss a shift with this short throw shifter upgrade you should just sell you car... BECAUSE you don't know how to drive it... I am very happy with spending the 50 bucks and taking the 45 minutes out of my day to install it...(maybe less for you, but I am careful when pulling the plastic and taking screws out, so I don't lose anything or scratch the plastic)..

It is amazing how the physics of moving the shifter cable up alittle can decrease the throw... I recommend all 6 speeders to do it.. It feels really good....

Another question -- basically to settle my generalized state of paranoia

It looks like when the shifter cable is remounted it is at a different angle then stock. Does this put any stress on the cable? Is it going to bend, crack, weaken, or break over the lifetime of the car? I'm sure I'll row through the gears thousands of times during the cars lifetime -- will the cable last after this upgrade?

Think of it this way, the shifter cable is like the cables on a 10 speed bike or the brake cables on that bike.. It is sleeved, I could of taken the shifter cable up another 2 inches.. When you have it apart you will see what I am talking about...It was not pulling, stretching, or kinking the cable, I used some Lithium grease and powder graffit on the moving cable and plastic... So the answer to your question is... I can't see the cable breaking, since everything went together so smoothly.

I installed mine yesterday. It took me about an hour total. I went real slow thou. It is very simple. Thanx for the heads up and pictures Jake, Smitty, and Rob it helped. I had to shave that white trim piece down really far to get it from popping up. I have to say I really like how it feels. The distance between the gears is perfect now. It seemed to far before. It is a little bit more notchy and harder to shift, but not that noticable. I would also recommend this too all 6 speeders. It is a great mod for $50.
