Navigation System

I would really like to add a navigation system to my 2001 CL.

I am a little confused on my options...

- can I add the Acura navigation system to my car even though I didnt get it installed originally?

- I've read stuff about a after market Alpine system .. and some other systems. What systems are out there .. what are the differences?

- I've also read that the navigation system interferes with/modifies the setup of the climate control/the stereo .. is this true?

Could anybody please explain what my options are. I would appreciate any help!!

Thanks

I believe that since you didn't get the CL with the navi preinstalled, you are going to have to go with an aftermarket headunit with a display and a navigation unit to ride in the trunk.

It is going to cost some money though...may I ask why you didn't get the CL with it installed? <- Just curious.

ok .. u asked for the story, here it is

I've had the CL for over a year now (hard to believe .. but I was owned the first CL in Indiana). Anyways, to make a long story short, I bought this car without ever having seen it, or driven it (all I knew about the car was from 30 minutes of surfing the web). I didnt even know about the navigation system till I got to the dealership and saw pictures in a brochure. I desperately needed a car (my 98 camry had been totalled the night before) and so I took what I was offered .. Dont get me wrong, I dont regret getting the car for one minute! I love the car!! I just wish I had had the time to realize the absent navigation system

Trade your CLS no NAV to one with a NAV it may cost you less then adding an aftermarket NAV. I saw a local dealer giving $1,500 off MSRP and sure you can get it lower.

------------------
Black, Ebony, 3.2 CL Type-S.
- Acura NAV.
- 3M clear bra (full front bumper, and side mirros)
- Wheels locks
- Mooonroof visor
- Splash guards
- Winter mats
- Trunk liner
- Acura Spoiler
- Valentine V1 Radar Locator
- HELMS Service Manual
- PIAA 19169 road lamps
- 03/19/01: Injen Polished CAI

u probably will have to pay about 4000-5000 more. and It s gonna be extremely hard to ADD a navigation to ur headunit. Because the Navi Sn has the A/C and all kind of crap. so i think they will have to undo everything to make it fit.. WHICH IS CALLED CUSTOMIZE!

The dash and A/C would be easy. The hard part would be mounting the DVD player and running all the cables.

Lots of good advice here. Just remember than you can accomplish anything with the right amount of money. And when going into a major purchase like a car, don't buy on impulse.

Haven't heard about the navi/ac/radio conflict rumor.

trade it in for a new one . A lot less work and mess than trying to convert. A decision like that is one you make and never go back on .

Someone once asked the dealer about adding the Acura OEM navi to a non navi car. The dealer says it can be done, but the catch is you have to buy the whole dash board, and it cost like $4000 or something. On top of that, the dealer don't want your old dash, so you have to take care of that yourself.
I think buying aftermarket systems like Alpine or Clarion auto-pc is the only way to go. I don't have the navi either and I'm thinking of using a Windows CE PDA as a navi, anyone has input on this?

garmin has announced (but is not yet shipping) a self-contained gps unit with color screen and voice directions for $999 (less at discounters). this would be the cheapest way to get voice-directed navigation into any non-navi car. the unit is called the streetpilot III.

it's really cool, I was going to install it in the CL-S, but didn't because my local install was trying to rip me off (only 1 place does it here in austin).
