Is the NAVI worth the 2 grand?

I am going to be purchasing a CL TypeS and need to know if the NAVI is worth the extra cash. What features does it have other than just maps?
Thanks
Arthur

On second thought, sometimes I think I should've gotten an aftermarket system. The alpine one is exactly the same thing, but also plays TV/Video (wel, we do now too...)and is an upgrade from the factory BOSE. It all depends, if you want to upgrade your stereo, don't get the Nav...spend it on an Alpine aftermarket head unit that has the Nav. If you are perfectly happy with the BOSE system, get the Nav. Just my opinion.

There's a guy on this board (StreetEffectz) who does custom audio / video work. There is an adapter you can use which allows you to hook up an outside source (PS2, DVD player, etc) to you NAVI system and get the video on there...sound through your stereo!!

I like the OEM all integrated look. not the lcd sticking out of the pen holder.

Really looks smooth w/ the screen and the TOUCH SCREEN a/c controls.
\

and yes, im plaining to add an aiwa dvd player and a decodoer w/ a fm modulator so it can play dvd's on our navi screen.

one more thing our navi mutes out the front speakers when its talking so you can here the directions even w/ the music up.

My frineds has the alpine dvd/navi and he can never put the volume up when he's using the navi which IMO totally sux.

Yes to all the above, plus when you need to go to a house party, finding nearest gas stations, driving in unfamiliar places, house-hunting (my real estate agent wished she had one), the fact that you can never get lost again, hell the time it'll save you (depending on your salary) will MORE than make up for the 2k. Not sure if aftermarket ones are better or worse, but I'm not buying another car without one.

Did anyone answer this, sorry...
The biggest benefit I like besides "just maps" are:
1. Typing in any address in the U.S. and finding both the Direct and Easiest Route to that address.
2. When traffic hits, taking detours that automatically gets you re-routed by the navi
3. Finding the nearest store by "category", like "auto parts", finding nearest gas stations if I'm running on empty, finding the nearest anything by typing in a name.
4. PHONE NUMBERS of all the places in the DVD, you can use it like a phone book, call ahead, make reservations, see if it's open, etc..
5. Storing your personal addresses so you can find your way back to all your own places (home, work, etc.)
6. When typing, it auto-completes your text if it can and shows only letters that are available, so it reduces hunting for the right letters and speeds up the process.

if you often drive to unfamiliar places then definitely yes.

my wife got one in her mdx first. she hesitated at first to buy it until the salesman gave a demo. she decided she had to have one and i did too. now we both have navi.

I have the NAV and I loved it!...

I am dying to have it in DVD-RAM, night-time maps/data updates via satellites, let it play DVD stock (please, let me insert the DVD in the 6 CD-ROM-DVDROM Chnager).

Oh, Yeah, I need weather reports updated, real-time traffic report hooked up to the Router.

Finally, Internet updates mixed with some bloomberg/Yahoo finance video via Satellite downlinks would top it.

Please can we have those at no cost as we do now

Sure, you can buy an aftermarket GPS, but one of the neatest things to me is that it is built into the dash! Also, the touch-screen controls for the AC are pimp in my opinion....Also, if you want to do aftermarket--you end up having to replace the deck which will look not quite as good, then the BOSE amps, then the BOSE speakers, etc. etc.... How about TWO SCREENS!! maybe not,

In that case I should have gotten the Nav, had no idea of its posibilities aside from just a map.

But, I bought my CLS with 7k miles used, so not really a choice in the matter... oh well :P

Of course you kill off your warranty if you make that mod to the stock navi system, and it aint cheap to fix. If you go aftermarket, you don't have to replace the stock stereo. You can go with a pop-out screen with multiple inputs in the notepad tray. The alpine aftermarket navi can hook into the stock stereo amp, same for alpine dvd player. Also more features in the aftermarket navi, and you can upgrade to a new unit and ebay off the old.

Depends on if you are into aftermarket equipment or not. And what you are using your CLS for.

For resale or insurance purposes, blue book for the navi is only a few hundred dollars. So don't make that your arguement. As far as looks go, I like the look of the M3 better.

Also note that it is not foolproof. Read the posts on this board. The screen has issues in winter weather, sometimes it does not pick the best route, and sometimes it will tell you to turn after you passed your turn.

You can also go with a gps system for a pda. You get daily updates to maps/etc, it will work in any car, and if you have to park your car in a lot, you can use it as you walk to find the restaurant.

Personally I saved myself the $2k, which was surprising, b/c I am definitely a gadget guy. I didn't think it was worth it then, and I still don't. I drive the same route to and from work Mon. - Fri., so I know where I'm going. For the times that I am going places that I've never been before, I use MapQuest. The odds are that I at least know part of the way, like the highway or something. I couldn't justify $2k for something I will rarely use. The only other reason I was going to buy it was for the DVD modification, but I can have a monitor put in for SOOO much less then $2k that it still made it not worth it. I have not put the monitor in, and I probably won't. The best part is that I still have the $2k in my pocket and thanks to good old fashioned getting directions before I go some where (and having a good sense of direction), I've never gotten lost.. and from what I've read about the Navi on here and TL.com, sometimes it's easier to just print the directions from the net b/c the Navi isn't always accurate either. Anyway, that's my $.02. Bottom line is you need to make the decision for yourself. You know if you'll use it or not.....

I find myself glad I didn't spend another $2k on the Navi. I have a good sense of direction and maps - so Navi is essentially pointless for me. It would just be another distraction while driving, something making my car a bigger target for theft, and something else expensive that can break.
I, too, am a gadget guy, but that was one thing I had no problem passing on.

Couldn't find the answer in the search, but does anyone know if you do get NAVI does it affect it if you replace the enitre stock stereo system with a new face/speakers/amps/subs???

I already have all of this stuff from my other car, and i want NAVI too. Does the aftermarket stuff that i have (all Alpine) interface well with the NAVI?

Thanks.

Yes, It is worth paying 7% extra.

Other than the obvious benefits, I think it makes the car alot better looking from the inside.

Get the navi it is the only way to go. I was about to buy a new CL-S and found a used one with navi and only 8000 miles last March for $27K. If you look around I am sure you can find one slightly used and save quite a bit of money if that is the only issue. I always use my navi to look up phone numbers of places. It helps, even if you are just going to buy a dvd and need to know who has the lowest price. Not to mention the dvd conversion is pimp and makes any long road trip fly by so quickly.

I am a Real Estate Appraiser and know my way around well. I did not have a choice on the Nav since that was all they had left...

From not even wanting one, I am now really gald that I got one. I am actually using it all the time. Some times I get a bit turned around and I just plug in the next address.

Neatest is when I am lost and want to get out. I usu just input Personal Address and it starts directing me out.

Get it,,

Hey you know how people who drive stick claim that only women drive automatics?

Maybe those of us without navi should claim that only women need Navi.

Hehe, it's in my sig.... Like juniorbean, Navi would not be very useful to me.

But, had I known about some of the other features and the tuner conversion, I might have gone with it...

I love the navi.
I got it just because it looked like a fun gizmo, but I use constantly.
I drive to courthouses all over the los angeles area, and its nice to be able to either call up the place or enter the address and then not have to worry about how to get there.

It's something I thought I would use for the first few weeks and then forget about, but I use all the time now.

I'm hoping it also helps with resale value, but somehow I think increasing resale value on a CL is going to be alost cause.

The only thing about Navi that sucks is that it's only a $500 add at trade-in.

That really sucks ... unless you sell it yourself to a person that REALLY wants it =) Then you're in like Flynn.

LOL.. that's way too funny. I even replied to it originally!!

I went right to the second page, so I didn't even realize that it was so old!! I'm going to leave this topic open anyway. That way, if people want to still add to it, they can, and maybe we'll FAQ it.....

Yes, absolutely, without a doubt, no question about it, no brainer, slam dunk, would opt for it again without diving it a second thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How's that for an endorsement!

I, and especially my wife, thought it would just be an expensive toy. Well we are both convinced and if available, all our future cars will be equipped with one.

I posted the following on a similar thread on Acura-TL.com:

When I bought mine, I, and especially my wife thought it would be an expensive toy. She has definitely been converted, it didn't take much to convert me.

Even when you're not asking for directions, it's helpful. I was stuck in traffic once not far from home. I wondered if I cut through the subdivision to my left, would it lead me out or would I go in circles, only to end up right back where I started. I quickly flipped on the map and the subdivision was laid out. Sure enough there were quite a few dead-ends, but I was able to follow a few obscure roads to get out of the jam. As many have said, explaining it does not have the same impact as experiencing it.

My wife took the car over the weekend and she was driving through some rural areas looking for new housing developments. She is terrible with directions and would get lost in our driveway if you blindfolded her, spun her around a few times and took the blindfold off. Anyway, she called me from the car and said what a wonderful feelingh it was to know that no matter how many turns she made, there was no way she would be lost because of this wonderful little invention.

other mentioned benefits:

ETA (estimated time of arrival) which is very accurate
business listings
different options to get to the destination (direct, easy, detour)
finding a location by category (leisure, banking, restaurant, etc.)
sorting by distance
NEVER HAVING TO ASK FOR DIRECTIONS AGAIN
NEVER GETTING LOST

Don't take our word on it. Go try it out with someone who knows how to use it effectively.

I had the option to get the cls- or the clp with navi for $26500 2001 new out the door. And selected the clp with navi. I love the cls but i was going to pay out my ass for the insurance. But i would have to say that it is a hot item to have in your car. With out it to me its just a regular luxury sports car with it its and classier more luxurious car. Never get lost, touch screen, factory installed, inside looks plain with out it.

If i had a choice again regarless of the insurance i would have done the same, or have gotten the cls with navi.

Good for impressing people.

I could have gotten the CLS w/ Navi or the CLS w/o Navi for the same price. The CLS w/o Navi had black leather interior, spoiler, mud flaps, and a better warranty. and the CLS w/ Navi had the tan interior, no spoiler, no mudflaps.

After trying the Navigation I realized how much it sucks to change your climate control. You have to fumble through touch screens and then press up over and over again to turn up the heater.

The Navigation is great for people who want to "impress" people when they step in. Its also great if you can get the PS/2, DVD, setup running on the display. If you want functionality the knob heating control works much better and you don't have to glance over to the display to make sure your touching the right spot.

For $2000 you can get a better aftermarket navigation or, buy a laptop w/ a GPS PCMCIA module and Microsoft Maps and you have a better navigation w/ a bigger screen and a DVD player. Plus you get a laptop!

I have a laptop now with DVD/CDRW combo drive and 12 hour battery life w/ Car AC power adapter. I also have a GPS system on the laptop that works when I leave the car too. Do you? I can also adjust my heat controls from 60 to 90 in less than 1 second. Can you?

If you want to impress people, then get the navigation :P. I would have gotten it if it was just navigation, but when they included all the touch screen climate controls, I just couldn't stand it . I kept thinking I was going to wreck the car during the test drive when I tried to turn the heater down!

But, to each his own...

It definitely makes the car look cooler if nothing else!! (By the way it looks cooler than my laptop sitting in my passengers lap too!

It amazes me how some people have to justify their decisions by "dissing" other people's choices.

I didn't get the nav to impress anyone. If that was my goal, I would have bought a different car. I'm a gadgets geek, and when buying my car, I wanted the nav. Actually, I had narrowed my car choices to either a Maxima or the TL and the TL won out because I wanted the nav.

As for the HVAC controls, I rarely adjust my temperature more than a degree or two. I leave it in AUTO all the time, so it's not a big deal for me.

As for comments on better units out there. I can't comment on which is better, but I like the fact that my laptop won't go flying off the seat if I brake hard, or that I don't have to ask my passenger to have a PC on their lap. Not to mention the times where you're already out and you need to find a location. Let's see, let me get my pc, boot it up, make sure the battery is charged up or connect it to the DC outlet, that's even if you have your PC with you. If you left it at home, break out the old Rand McNally. I like the fact that the Nav is integrated, especially with the radio when giving you the audio directions. Once I've entered my destination, I never have to take my eyes off the road.

95% of the time, I'm driving alone in my car to and from work. The only person my car needs to impress is me, which it continues to do to this day.
