Buy a 2001 Civic HB, put the K20 (Type-R) motor in... spend some $$ on suspension/wheels/etc.

You have a car quicker than the Elise for around $20K

Albeit FWD!

yeh i could, but i don't like civics, especially hatchbacks
A new warranty would be great too and just the Lotus name is plenty for me. I was actually wanting to get a pre-owned Esprit v8 until my dealer told me about the new Elise.

Funny that you mentioned it looks like a celica, because the engine is actually the 2FZZ engine (or something similar to that alphanumeric combo) from the new GT-S. And they'll squeak out a few more horses from it's 1.8 4 banger with 180 hp to around 200. Yes, i do agree it's a bit small, but definitely unique. There would not be any other car in the world this size that I would want!

i'd do what allmotor said.. what's the fun in buying a car that's already all fixed up?!!? i mean don't get me wrong, i wouldn't mind having a lotus, ferrari, porsche or even just a nsx .... but even the nsx can be highly tuned as can the porsche....

i'd say buy a car that you can not only have fun with but also one that you can customize exactly how you want it.

Yah, you said it. FWD I'll take the Elise, put a turbo on that k20 and have a 1700lbs car with 300hp AND be RWD

If I had to guess, the road going Elise is going to come in at the high $30ks.....$38k-$39k. Also, you may want to put a small deposit down now or soon. I think this is going to be an MSRP+ car when it drops.

Ever sit in one? It's a shell with seats, total and complete track car...nothing more.

The U.S. car will have leather and a radio though.

i definitely won't leave the car untouched if i get it--i have some plans. No ones' taking deposits yet either. I have a good friend of mine at Criswell Lamborgini/Lotus/Hummer here in DC that will hopefully get me a good deal on one, but i will put a deposit down when necessary.
In the shadows i also may see a new G35 lurking.

Or you can just swap the K-20 or F-20c (S2000) into the elise. There's a guy who makes the motor mounts for this swap. And he has a K-20 in his Elise. Seen the car twice wit my own eyes. (Once at his shop, and at this yrs L.A. Auto show.) Forgot the name of the shop, hell forgot the name of the company. But when i find it, I'll post the link.

(Shit looks sick!!!!) Mad props..

Actually this year is the first year they are being imported here, and will come in as a 2005 model at the end of 2003 for upper $30k's. It's definitely legal. We'll see if it will be too small for me, should be bigger than the MR2 though, but not weigh as much.

a celica GT-S engine would not be a good choice unless they did something to smooth out the powerband. A 20-30hp spike@ 6K would not be something you'd want to encounted when driving a 1700lb car that is mid engine RWD at it limits.
