Nice car. About the spoiler: the purpose of a spoiler is to reduce aerodynamic drag by diverting turbulent airflow. How does that spoiler divert any airflow if all the air hits the windshield anyway?

Nice job with the prelude. It looks like it got 2 hoops on the hood. Looks like a camel!

wow... sharp car. I, too, am not particularly fond of the hood "wing", but hey...

whatever creams your twinkie, right?

Overall, I think the wheels are the strong point. Minus the inscriptions, I would consider them for my car.

No, that is not the purpose of a spolier. A spoiler is intended to reduce the lift effect of an automobile at high speeds, countering the tendancy of the body of a car to act as a wing -reducing the amount of weight resting on the tires thus reducing friction and the abitlity to control the car. Spoilers actually increase drag, because some of the energy used to propell he car is then used to hold the car to the pavement. Spoilers are more widley used for comsetic purposes than function, as extreme speeds adverse driving conditions are in order before the benefits would out-weigh the detriments. For example, the spoiler on our cars serves absolutley no purpise other than to fill in the empty-look of our rear end. I might take a guess that the location of the spoiler at hand may actually perform in two ways; one by reducing the acutness of the hood-windshield angle making for a smoother line for airflow, and two by diverting bugs from a collision course with the windshield. As a spoiler in the traditional since, I would not imagine it to be very effective. Much like those "air-dams" you see on the hoods of large trucks.

All air flow at speed by the way, is turbulent.

Isn't that a wing? There's a difference.

In simplest terms, a wing creates downforce. A spoiler reduces drag.

Those are wings on the back of the Arrows Asiatech and Prost Acer F1 cars.

Here's the spoiler on the back of my Legend:

negative.

a wing and spoiler create drag just by being there in the airflow. the idea is that the wings (front and rear) on those formula cars contribute to the downforce created by the underbody tray's venturi effect.

on the other hand, the spoiler installed on the audi quattro tt is there to break up the laminar airflow over the rear of the car to reduce lift. it breaks up the laminar airflow by creating turbulence, which itself causes drag, as well.

most wings and spoilers on production cars are simply cosmetic. either the car doesn't suffer excessively from lift at higher speeds (because it gets designed out) or the wing isn't mounted in such a way that it can create meaningful downforce and the mounting area to which it is attached isn't strong enough to support the additional weight (of the downforce) even if it could.

for a truly aerodynamic car, you generally want to reduce the frontal area as much as possible, eliminate sudden starts and stops and breaks in the surface area of the car body (such as scoops and louvers and where sideview mirrors and door handles, etc. just out) and you want a rear end that contributes to the closing of the "envelope" of air around the car with as little turbulence as possible. spoilers (and wings) are contrary to this end, but sometimes downforce or lift elimination is more important than aerodynamic effeciency.

Correct observations and good info. I'm going to find the article about spoilers that was in Car and Driver a few years ago. There was some good info and diagrams in there.
