It works for me.

I got all excited for the rebate, but the $15 rebate is only good at certain stores. None of which are near me and the $10 coupon at Autozone is moot since they charge $13 more then WalMart does for the oil.

Group III Hydro processing and Refining: Group III base oils are subjected to the highest level of mineral oil refining of the base oil groups. Although they are not chemically engineered, they offer good performance in a wide range of attributes as well as good molecular uniformity and stability. They are commonly mixed with additives and marketed as synthetic or semi-synthetic products. Group III base oils have become more common in America in the last decade.

Thats all I needed to read! Dino oil with "additives" is not synthetic oil. I have no problem with them switching as it is thier product. But to charge and lable it as "Full Synthetic" is BS!

I had heard that they switched to Group III, but i never looked it up to see what it actually ment, until now.

I'm done with Mobil 1 after 12 years of loyalty! Well I cheated a few times when Valvoline was on sale...

Ive known full well for quite some time that it isn't full synthetic. The car doesnt feel right on anything else though. Maybe its a placebo effect, who knows. I havent tried Amsoil or Royal Purple, nor can I justify the price because of how frequently I rack up miles. As it is now an oil change is $24. Thats a 5 quart jug of M1 and a Honda filter and about 15 minutes getting my hands dirty but knowing its done properly.

I'm sure M1 is still a good oil. I just don't like the fact that they are still charging the synthetic premium price. Just gets under my skin.

Civic, let me knkw the next time u change your oil. I'll give u an oil change kit with the filter with their mid tier oil (xl) for free. They just released the OE line which is about $5/qt with a drain interval of oe spec which is 6k. XL is about 10k miles. Even though im a dealer I didnt market it as the best oil. But qith my 15k mile drain interval, results were shocking. Wear metals where just over the 5,500 mile typical wear. And I drove my car.

Sweet, Ill let you know next time Im up that way. Ive got to send in my last sample to Blackstone to see how the M1 is doing. That will be the major decider on what I plan to do. Ill check out the OE line too. $5 a quart is more palatable.

I agree with that. When they did change they kept it very quiet.

Nice deal. I get an oil change with Mobile 1 full-synthetic, filter, tire rotation and balancing, and inspection for $20 done for me so I'll pass but great for those doing it themselves.

the only useful rebate is autozone, none of other rebates are for autozone, pepboys or wallmart.... otherplaces are expensive, so its pointless...

These arguments about which synthetic oil is better are funny. Mobil1 will do fine, it works.

From their website:

Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology a fully synthetic motor oil?

Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application

I prefer Catrol and Pennzoil syns.

Not sure if your saying you dont care or if the arguments are moot because there is a fact that each synthetic oil is different depending on brand and viscosity.

My point is that for most people any major brand synthetic oil will do fine. The only time you could tell the difference if you are putting your engine under severe conditions, long drain intervals (15K miles+), or planning to put 500K miles on your engine, then yes, it would matter which synthetic oil you are using. If you dont fall under these conditions, Mobil1 is fine.

Oh okay, then I agree with you. Most oil related problems comes from people that don't change their oil often enough. As long as you do, it really doesnt matter which oil (syn or dino to a point) that you use, unless your under the circumstances stated above my russiandude

I agree with you. What has me anti Mobil 1 after 12+ years of loyal use is the fact that they compleatly changed thier formula to a mineral based oil (In other words NOT synthetic, but use synthetic additives and call it "Full Synthetic") they are still charging a "Full Synthetic" premium price. Then to top it off they (Mobil 1) will tell you its a secret recipe when you ask about what base oil they use. That is effin BS! I'm sure thier oil is still a great oil but I don't like being ripped off! Thats how I see what they have done.

They are using a group 3 base wich is mineral (I think there is another word I'm searching for besides Mineral) based oil. Not synthetic.

I think it's time to make the switch to Ams Oil. Not happy with the Pennzoil Platinum I used last time in the wifes car. There was alot of brown sludge in the bottom of the bottles. Some say it was just the additives. Well if I'm paying for additives then I want them in my engine not the bottom of the oil bottle.

Disclaimer: I'm not here to sell anyone on M1. Any Group III blend oil out there today (and for that matter dino oil too) is plenty good for the average user. Personally, I've been running M1 for 114K now on my TL. I'm not particularly loyal to M1, it just works for me and with 7500 mile/6 month drain intervals I can always find it on sale sometime in the 6 month period before the next change. O'reilly's has it on sale at $4.99 at least once a quarter.

If your interested, I ran a UOA on my last change (8200 miles with PureOne filter, M1 5w20). Here's the link:

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/i...llerl/oil1.jpg

FWIW, M1 0w40 is a very, very good oil and many sources believe it is a true full synthetic, although I haven't seen any proof of this. Since I can get it for $4.99 from O'reilly's now, I've started running it in my TL.

As to the "fully synthetic" vs. Grp III discussion, a little history lesson:

Castrol started the whole controversy when they advertised their Grp III blend oil as fully synthetic. Exxon-Mobil cried foul and protested to the National Advertising Review Council (part of the National Advertising Division of the BBB) in 1999. (The case # is 3526. If you are a BBB member and have a subscription to the NARC (http://www.narcpartners.org/reports/CaseReports.aspx), you can download the pdf.)

The case went to arbitration and the final ruling was in favor of Castrol.

So E-M decided "if you can't beat them, join them". They changed to a Grp III blend and called it fully synthetic per the arbitration ruling. Yeah, they didn't announce the change nor will they even confirm it even today.

Here's a link to the full arbitration case:

Hate the thread cap but I was at pepboys the other day and picked up 5 qts of Royal Purple 5w20 + the filter for $40. $6 for each quart and $10 for the filter. Reg is $8.99/qt and $14.99 for the filter.
