[Warning: Dumb question to follow]

Do you add extra oil over the 4.6q that's required with an oversized filter?

[/dumb question]

Yes, you have to compensate for the capacity of the filter. I always fill it with oil before I put it in.

This is good for at least two reasons:

1. Filling the oil filter first lets you pour in just 4.6 quarts for the crankcase.

2. The oil filter (M1-104, for instance) takes more than 1/4 of a quart. That means if you don't fill it, the engine will run without oil for the time it takes for the oil filter to fill up, filter, then send out the oil upon first engine start after the oil change.

Always fill it first, unless you have engines like the B18 block where the filter mounts horizontally. In that case, you really can't fill the filter beforehand.

Oh, yeah, I use M1-104 or Fram, depending on where I get the oil from, because some places don't sell Mobil1 filters.

The guys on the Subaru boards are obsessive about pre-filling their oil filters. Ever since I read about this on those boards I've been doing it (maybe a year). I never prefilled before. Prior to the prefill the 'check oil' light would light for a millisecond -- now its on somewhere in the order of microseconds.

Prefilling the filter is easy and I think logical.

Is the oversized filter any better for the car that the stock size?

If you do regular changes, shoudl you just stick with the stock size?

Yes, it filters better, longer.

Depends on the brand/qualtiy of your filter.

I use stock size Bosch (3312) filter every 3750, oil every 7500.

Anyone know what the oversized Bosch # is?

I'd like to run a larger filter, 7500.

overly anal IMO You would think you can also crank the engine without statring it and prelube the whole thing...
