Wow! That, I was not expecting.





The German firm is secretly working on a new E-Class that will combine the best of both worlds. Using the codename C219, the newcomer will blend sleek bodywork with seating and practical access for four. The car is expected to rival the likes of Audi's forthcoming A4 Coupé and sporty BMW 6-Series, and go on sale in 2004. It will hit the streets once Mercedes has launched the estate range, due out next year.

Although the basic design of the Coupé has been finalised, stylists are still debating over the doors. One theory is that the car will use a conventional set-up as shown in the current issue of Auto Express magazine, while another suggests it will sport barn-style doors, similar to those on Mercedes' 2002 Detroit Motor Show concept, the Vision GST. Nevertheless, the programme is said to be well ahead of schedule. As with the forthcoming AMG E55, all Coupés will feature four-wheel drive, Sensotronic electronic brakes and active air-suspension. Six-speed automatic boxes will be standard and five engines will be offered in Europe, including three petrol and two diesel units.

Entry-level cars will be powered by Merc's 3.2-litre V6, while flagship versions will boast either a 5.0 or 5.5 supercharged V8. A 3.2-litre V6 and 4.0 V8 diesel will be available, while options will include a dash-mounted TV and voice-activated E-mail and Internet.

No decision has been taken on which cars will come here, but prices are expected to start at around £40,000. Bosses admit an E-Class Coupé would fill the gulf between the CLK and CL, and the last model, the E300 CE, sold well until production ended in 1993

 

ooooo....so many things to look forward to in the future.

That's weird that they're going to try to make a four door a "coupe" I don't see the point of having those half doors in the rear.

They prolly made the new CLK more like the C so they could fit this into their lineup. Kind of stupid I think. I guess they are just trying to make more money.

 

ok first of all let me adress some things.
1) OF COURSE THEY WANT TO MAKE MORE MONEY!!!!! im sorry man, i usually dont rip on people but, Thanks captain obvious!

2)ive heard of this, its basically another coupe, not much about it otherwise. i think maybe it could be good for variety but bad b/c it seems to be cluttering the line up, espescially b/c the engines of the CLK this new E coupe and SL are basically the same. and as far as luxury, i dont know what they could possibly do to make a stunning interior from the CLK even better yet make the SL worth the extra g's. the outsides may be the only noticibale distinction between the CLK and this, or even the SL. i think the 4 door coupe thing is a novelty, and i know this will probly get no one to agree with me BUT i think if they really want to make a four door coupe look more coupe like and sporty they MB should look at how Mazda's RX8 4 door coupe concept is designed or even that Saturn with the third door, on those pics it looks too much like a real 4 door car with a shitty back seat. i think the head lights look pimp.

but yeah, i think i heard from the MB dealer they were persuing an E coupe kinda thing. have any of you seen the new SLK pics?

Ummm... Coupe by its definitions means "2 door automobile".... :thinking: so this is a COUPE with 4 doors?!
