Major Upgrading Planned Now...

I just got my Tanabe Hyper Medallion exhaust put on and AEM CAI this past saturday, and I love it. The sound is incredible, the low grumble at up to about 2700 RPM that turns into a badass higher pitch but still VERY agressive sound when the VTEC kicks in. The car feels considerably quicker, also, maybe it's all in my head.

This is the first upgrade I've done to the engine since I've had the car, and I'm officially addicted, love my car even more than before(which I didn't think was possible) and plan on doing some major upgrading in the near future. I have LOTS of questions, but be patient please

Does anyone have any ideas about the increase in hp / torque adding exhaust / CAI provided?

Is there anyone who has a VTEC controller, and how do you like it?

Turbo or SC?

Scalbert: what's this RES everyone is talking about?

you can search most of this, or read the threads on res, and that cai was good for maybe 5-10 hp.

The exhaust provide little to no gains. The CAI is about 10 WHP at best.

Forget a VTEC controller, it does nothing on these cars.

You have an '01 5AT, the only option is the supercharger.

The RES, at this point, is a paper weight.

Maybe your next step should be a set of headers. They are by far the best upgrade for the CLS.

I agree the VTEC controller is a waste of money and time, the unichip is a possibility. It is a bit annoying getting the right map, but I can assure you once you get the map right, it feels like the headers all over again.

Other than that .. there arent a whole lot of mods out for the CLS. The supercharger is obviously available, if your cash flow is available.

Steve: did you setup a definite appt for testing the RES with that guy for Monday? Are you going to test the TB as well? or the polished manifold?

I tested it earlier today.

The TB and manifold will most likely be independantly tested, soon.

Yeah, I remember reading some stuff about the headers earlier on here... I did a search b/c I remember someone talking about one brand of header being better than another, but I couldn't find any results... Do any of you guys have headers installed? What brand? I'll probably end up installing mine here shortly since I'd decided against getting wheels from ronjon (winter is getting ready to set in here in a couple months and I wouldn't be able to sport the chrome very much longer )

lol, are you serious bud? Half of the members here have headers installed, and for a good reason. They are by far the best bang for the buck mod for the CL-S. Generally most will agree they add about 25-30 wheel horsepower at like 4000RPM straight to redline, but the car feels much less labored and peppier at all RPM's. Bottom line, if you like what the exhaust and intake did for you, you will LOVE the headers .. considering they add about 3 times as much as your intake+exhaust probably did. Not to mention your exhaust note will change (for the better) with the headers installed.

The better brand I'm sure your referring to is Comptech Sport. They are by far the best set of headers for the CL-S, Never had fitment or quality issues, or none have ever been reported. Although, they are pricey ... retail for 1249$. But they can be had for about a grand. If you get lucky you can get a used set for like 700$.

The other option is OBX. However they have fitment issues and quality issues (warped flanges, pipes not lining up, holes not lining up, weird resonating noises, etc) .. and there are other sets popping up that may or may not be of good quality (they have not really been put into mainstream to be tested). These are Stone, Alpha-Werks, etc. OBX can be had for about 300 on ebay and the other two for about 400 or 450.

You get what you pay for, but definetly the most worth while mod for the CLS.

Comptech does the same thing. I think all the exhausts for the CLS do that.

I just can't wait to surprise a few people... A co-worker of mine has a 2002 mustang GT and he tells me to "race a V6 if you're gonna race a mustang", I can't wait to at least give him a run for his money (hopefully)
