Major Insurance hike
Major Insurance hike
Has anyone in the group had their CLS insurance raised for absolutely no reason?
I just received my 6 month renewal from nationwide insurance. I have been with them for 30+ years. They raised the six month premium on my '03 CLS from $221.50 to $401.80 for the exact same coverage!. I have not had a ticket, no accidents and have a total of 5 cars with them! The increase was damn near double what it was!
I called and got the standard run around. One clerk stated that the CLs has been
moved into the high performance category. When I said "no way to that", she said the high performance classification is based upon hp to weight ration. Again I say BS to that in that they aslo insure a Corvette ZR1 for me and that car has a
factory hp rating of 375 and weighs in at 3570 lbs. The CLs is 260hp and weighs nearly as much at 3,470 lbs. High performance my rear.
Anyone else had this happen?
Thanks,
KX

Insurance companies
KXM........as a matter of financial "policing", I change companies every 2 to 3 years. I have found that they raise rates on established customers, even if their driving records are perfect. Also, as accident results/data come in on newer cars, they will adjust their numerical symbols accordingly and hence, rates. With Liberty Mutual, my SVT Focus is higher to insure than the CL-S! Go figure. I would shop around and check AIG, Liberty Mutual, Progressive etc.
Not a credit issue as i am an old fart with a FICO score at nearly 800.
And yes, the $01.80 is for full coverage, in Calif. My bitch is that the $401 is
nearly double! That to me is a nasty rate hike.

I am covered with Nationwide and noticed that the collision portion of my coverage went up on my 2001 CLS, but not as much as you have seen. It's a recent change as I just got my renewal statement late in December. I think I am now paying around $380/6 months here in the suburbs of Chicago, IL.
The policy included a note on the back of the first page that the car had been reclassified. My agent confirmed that the car had been bumped up into a higher performance category.
Lucky for me the coverage on my other car (Audi A6) was lowered so I saw no real increase in the total bill.

Shop around and get some better quotes and then call up your current insurance company and explain to them that unless they can come up with a damn good reason for the rate you will be switching companies. Then name off the quotes and tell them where they can stick it for good measure. Insurance companies are known rapists and deserve no respect nor mercy.

damn you guys pay a lot for insurance.
I always shop around.
I am paying around $500 for my CL-S every 6 months. Allstate Property & Casualty Insurance. 0 tickets, 0 accidents, 0 school traffic, excellent credit.
Check esurance.com also.

I would shop around and you should get somewhere near you older rate..........
Thanks for the replies guys. I checked with TWO other companies out here and went WOW, if Nationwide was bad, these other two were way over the top
insane.
So, I call Nationwide back and bang on the drum and threaten to leave (I figure I have paid them $40,000+ over the 30 years or so I have been with them) and
they say, well sir, that is your perogative. They do not care. So, I pay them or pay someone else. I evevn threaten to take my home owners elsewhere, same "we do not care answer'!
A supervisor did give me this though: car is now listed in the high performance category partly because Acura refers to the CL-s as a high performance car in its literature. Also, due to the accident rate and pay outs involving the CL-s, it's
rating has been put into a higher risk category. I take that to mean that the more accidents everyone gets into collectively, the more all of us have to pay, collectively.
Just for some of you to compare, my rates went up like this:
OLD NEW
Comprehensive $49.30 $86.70 +75%
Collision 71.60 123.00 +72%
Prop. liability 48.90 93.80 +92%
Bodily liability 51.70 98.30 +90%
All are Calif minimums with $500 & $1,000 deductables.

Obvious - Insurance is a scam. Can't live with it and can't live without it.
If you want a real kick to the 'ol ballz, check out your favorite insurance company's quarterly financial filings. They're absolutely swimming in money!
I hadn't thought about it before, but I agree with bc01cls. Why not raise the rates of long time customers. They haven't shown any inclination to switch so raise their rates. Is that what long term loyalty gets you these days? Nice catch, bc01cls. I think you're spot on.

Appreciate the input....but walking this earth for so many years
has taught me how not to be taken advantage of. Therefor, I
do keep my insurance companies honest by checking the rates I am
charged vs that of other companies. Believe me, I do get the best
rates possible for the area in which I live. Sort of have to with
so many cars in the stable. Nuts I know, but I have two sons
and well,.... At any rate, on average (up till now) these cars cost
me around $400 each per year to insure, full coverage.
Guesss I will have to swallow the huge increase on just the one
car and be glad it was not all 5 of them. And yes, the longer you
live the more often one will run into these scams....just need to
try to not get your ass bit off!

Since you live in CA, try giving Wawanesa a call. I have them and they are great. I'm 24 with one accident ( 2 years ago, will drop off in March 05) and i'm paying $1500 a year. Sounds like a lot, but with AAA they wanted to take $2200 a year from me.
I actually met a AAA agent at a gas station once, and even with his AAA employee discount, it was STILL more than what Wawanesa could give him as a retail/normal customer.
They only insure good drivers, wich you are. Customer service is great and their rates are top notch. I think like something aorund 85% or more of their business is generated strictly from referrals. I have convinced almost all my family to switch over to them and no BS, they ALL got better rates than they had before.
Honestly, check them out, it couldnt hurt.

GEICO = uber expensive.
My rates didn't drop at all once I hit 21. 25 is the big drop off.
21 years old 3 speeding tickets and i pay 1700 for six months. In may I'll lose two of tickets and qualify for a good driver discount... which should run me about 1100-1300 for six months full coverage.
Check if they have any discounts like if your married, this company gives me 20 % off, also for consistency another 20 % off and finally the good driver discount that i don't have yet will give me another 20% off. At least that is what my broker told me

Insurance hit
I have State Farm and I've been dishing out around $480/6mo for my CL-S. And I live in the backwoods of Peoria, IL. Nontheless, that was a major stick up for me, going up 50% from my 99 Solara. My 95 Mazda MX6 LS runs me about $325/6mo. I haven't seen a major rate increase on the scale talked about here, however. As for rate discounts with the driver's age, that depends on your insurer and your state. Most insurers in most states give discounts at 21 and 25, but I think California doesn't do the 21 discount (from what I was told by relatives who live there). I'm moving to Tucson AZ in two weeks, and I already got rate quotes for out there... yet another 50% hike - for BOTH cars ! Man, must be all them damn illegals crossing the border and stealing cars to take back home with them...

Have 1 out of 2 cars on the roads with no insurance, makes our freaki rites rise big time.
Jail time should be impossed to people with no insurance.
i have a 03 cl-s 6 speed, and pay $379 a month full coverage in PA, which is the same as my care payment. kept the PA insurance when i moved back to NJ cause NJ wanted $500 a month!!!!! and that is with 2 points for careless. when i lived in NJ a while back with 4 points, it was $7200 a year!!!! insurance is a f'ing joke around me. but what are you going to do. just bend over, grab your ankles and hope they use lube i guess

As the CLS becomes more affordable, younger drivers will get them, more will be in accidents. When I first got my CLS it was cheaper to insure than a Maxima, Prelude, or Integra, but cost much more to buy or replace. The payments and insurance on a 20k Prelude was more than the CLS.

Plus with the recent hurricanes and floods, insurance comapines need $$$.
