Maint Req. Light Is On!

My maint. req. light has been on for two days now and i don't know why. the car is performing as it should and is having no problems. i cant take it to the dealer because the 50,000 or 4 year warranty was up in october. i plan on getting a diagnostics ran after work, but just want to see if there is any info anyone can give me. many people say to check your gas cap and i have, its on tight. what could it be? the tranny jet kit was done around 25,000 miles and the car has 35,000 miles now and is still on first tranny. any info? any suggestions?

-also-
is the SRS light supposed to be on? havent noticed it before, but its on now.

-thanx in advance-

The SRS light is not surposed to be on. If you have anything on the passenger seat, that will trigger the light. I've had a sandwich from the deli sitting on the seat and even tho' it was light (weight) it set off the SRS light.

The maint. req. light is documented in the owners manual... here's what I posted in the FAQ forum here:

thanks a lot GreenMonster, it is very much appreciated.

-now does anyone know about the SRS light? nothing is on the seat and it is constantly on. When people sit in the passenger seat the SIDE AIRBAG light always comes on but ive heard about that before. i havent heard about the SRS light being on. ANY comments/suggestion/people w/same problem/info. would be helpful.

Mine came on one day when it was REALLY cold out (-20 F) and it has been on ever since. Apparently, that sensor is very touchy, some people have said that when the light comes on, they simply whack the seat a couple of times and it goes off (I'm not that lucky)

I have also been told that the sensor may be able to be reset by an Acura mechanic.

There is also a way to use a paper-clip to to combine two wires or something (not really sure what it does) that turns the light off, but I am not sure if that is a permanant fix to the situation. You will have to do a search to find these instructions.

And last, but not least, you can have the sensor replaced, which I have been told is usually done for between $300 and $400.

I will be taking mine in, in the spring and see if the sensor can be reset, otherwise, I might be springing for a new sensor.

Best of luck, let us know what you decide to do and how it turns out.

my srs stayed on like that as well...ended up being a faulty seat buckle and they fixed free of charge since i had just bought it. I looked at the bill and it showed a $215 charge....hope that helps!

Lightbulb

Some cell phones will cause the SRS to light. Also, cold temperatures will cause the seat cover to retract putting pressure on the seat switch.

true, but ive tested the sensor and it needs to have some moderate pressure to realize someone is in the seat or it wont work. i dont think the cold temp putting pressure on the seat is really a good explanation for it, nor do i think the cold temps have anything to do with it.
go to the dealer, have them reset it. if it still gives problems, your sensor is busted or this could be a more severe problem, either way the dealer will tell you what the hell is going on.
if your under warranty, then you should have absolutely no worries unless the car has been in a wreck or has sustained heavy damage from a previous impact.

Here's the paper-clip fix

It is a yellow connector with two wires in it that is plugged into the fuse box, unplug it and pull it down. Once you have done that you can begin the process of erasing the memory. NOTE: This will only reset your SRS System if what caused it to trigger has been fixed, Ex: turning the ignition on with any SRS Plugs disconnected, such as pulling your seat out.

1st step in erasing the memory is to turn the ignition off and connect the SCS Service connector to the MES Plug,

2nd Turn Ignition on. SRS indicator light will come on for about 6 seconds then go off.

3rd Disconnect SCS service connector for MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS indicator light goes off. SRS indicator light will come on again.

4th Reconnect SCS service connector the MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS light comes on. SRS indicator light will go off.

5th Disconnect SCS service connector from MES connector within 4 seconds. SRS indicator light will indicate that memory is erased by blinking 2 times.

6th Turn ignition off, and wait 10 seconds. Start vehicle like normal and light should come on and go out like normal. You have reset your SRS light, congrats.
Good luck.

And here I am taking the instrument cluster out and removing the bulb. Helped the beater to pass inspection though.

As dumb as it sounds, I believe that cold temps DO have something to do with it. Mine went out on a day when the temp was -20, and I have read in numerous other posts that extremely cold temps were present at the time of their SRS light coming on as well. I can't say that I do know what the connection is, but there does seem to be one.

And he is no longer under warranty, which is why he is exploring his options...

does this actually work? has anyone done it? if so, will it just turn off the SRS light permantly(so i will NOT be warned w/this light if there are future problems)? does this process just ERASE the memory forever, or does it reset it so if there is a problem the light will come back on? :unclear:

It resets the light, but if there is a actual problem the light will come back on. My light was triggered when the battery went bad, very slow cranking speed, and the paper clip trick worked fine.
