Since my friend's a bmw dealer, I was able to drive a used M coupe I was considering. It was very fast, but the back seemed a little too rough. I think this has to do with the rear suspension set up which dates back to the E36 3 series.

i love the car, but realistically its a lot of money for what you get...certainly its fucking fast, but not a whole lot of luxary...i think for that much money, you could get a vette too right?

I've been reading up on the M Coupe thanks to some pointers to websites that I asked for last week.

I think the car is absolutely sweet.

Note that there are two different engines depending on what year you go for. Make sure you get the second engine they put in it (I think its in the '00 and up). Second engine has the 315hp six whereas the first engine had something like 240.

Love it or hate it, the Mcoupe got a shit load of attention wherever it went....couldn't leave that car for more than 10 minutes without someone either driving around it or going up to it (mine was dropped though, with a B&B exhaust....was loud).

It's a rare car, at least where I live, so it will always get you looks, but not because it's pretty.

Its not a gorgeous car, wasn't designed to be.....but it is mean looking, especially from the back. In the time I had that car, I mostly received only compliments on it. I had some people say it looked like a Civic or Golf on steroids, shit like that. But overall, most people really liked it and thought it was cool.

Yeah, got some of that as well.....looks like a shoe/sneaker.

Guess I like shoes, because some people think the Viper looks like a Clown shoe.

M Coupe styling = eigenwillig

Considering the better power-to-weight (the later ones) and the e36 rear end, I heard that it's more of a driver's car than even the vaunted e46 M3. And I haven't heard about any cases of their I6 grenading. (The slight detune might be a good thing.)

We certainly see a lot of them at autocrosses and track days.

The Z3 interior is a big disappointment to me, especially with its goofy two tone seats. The exterior continues to polarize, like the new 7-series and Z4. I say it's unique in a really cool way. However, for the money, can't one buy a M3? If that's true, give me the "real" car. If not, I'm not sure I would buy it.

P.S. What's the hp difference on the Z3 3.0 and M coupe. I think they're close.

Yes, it absolutely is one of the uglier cars around today. It's a perfect balance of a slapdash and kumquat.

3.0 has the 225 hp engine that the 330 has (im pretty sure), and the M has 315...so yea major difference. BUT, the interior is almost the same of the two cars...so basically you pay about 15k for a 90 hp increase, and better handling, which may or may not be worth it...
