LSD's Availabe for Type-S
LSD's Availabe for Type-S
I was just reading the topic about the GTP's and someone mentioned getting someone to make LSD's for our cars. I did some research b/c I had been interested in one of these for our cars. I discovered there is a company called Phantom Grip that makes an LSD conversion kit for our cars. I confirmed through the company that they do work seemlessly on our cars.
The price is $260 & can be purchased from www.mmrusa.com

I think thats awesome. The only problem is with our trannies. If we modify the trannies they wont have naymore waaranty, which means if it goes out, we are screwed. And at the rat esome of these trannies are going, kinda scary.
Although install is a different story. I'm sure with just install it could go up to 1000.

Hopefully this will be available on the 2002 CLS's. And hopefully the transmission issues will be resolved. I can see this being a really great upgrade for that little money!

If you need even more information, run a search with google.com for "phantom grip" and "detroit locker".
If there's a single rule in life that holds up well, it's that you get what you pay for.

Well, you can find that out for yourself if you just run a search on it.
The man that works next to me installed one of these units in his truck and although it works he had take it apart several times to get it to work reasonably well.He had asked the tech people at the com pany about the possibilty of using this thing in a FWD trans and they said that it was not advised. Now a truck with RWD is easy to access the diff but in a FWD car you have to remove the trans if a adjustment is required and that could run into some serious money.Better you folks wait and see if a good alternative comes to market.Jens
I have serious doubts about making a getting a limited slip to work with the traction control and VSA...
As the power is "lost" to a slipping wheel, a limited slip will try to direct power away from that wheel. The VSA will also try adding brake pressure to that wheel. So, now the diff sees a wheel that looks locked (for that brief moment). The diff dumps power in to our "wonderful" brakes and this creates a control system feedback loop that was never designed into the car’s VSA system. The diff creates a 2nd control loop that may or may not be "upset" the VSA (sure couldn’t be great on the brakes). I would advise people to think about what would be going on (between the LSD and the VSA)
There was mention of how the latest Porsche Carerra dropped stability control on cars with 2-wheel drive, electronic throttle, and a rear limited slip -- they though the car had a “funny behavior” (4WD retains the control system and they note that the problem stems from the electronic throttle system [I wonder…])
Perhaps someone could argue that this is worth a test. I say sure! However, as suggested, who wants to take a still "unsorted" transmission apart to install a limited slip to see just how sure they can be about NOT ever getting warranty support.
