Lotus Elise
Lotus Elise
I just read an article that was handed to me by my assistant here at work on the new Lotus Elise built by Sun International (www.sunspeed.com). The specs on it say it can achieve 0-60 in 5.1 and 1/4 mile in 13.2. It uses the same engine as the Type R, a 4 banger with 200bhp and 190 ft-lbs torque. How is this possible? Is VTEC that good or is the fact that the car has a fiber glass (plastic) body and weighs only 1,710lbs, curb weight?
Perplexing, no?

The stock weight on that car is about 1700lbs. Makes it the perfect car for auto-x.

i've gotten a chance to ride in 2 of these. 1 had a type R motor the other had the rover motor which is basically identical. I got to drive up angeles crest in the passanger seat (one of my co-workers has a new lotus S8) during a lotus run. These things are amazing!
Here's a nice looking picture of one:
I've never been into roadsters, but I would consider one of these. $55,000 price tag, not too bad.

55K Is that after the import fee and to make it legal to drive in the states? I was looking at them a couple years ago and they were 35K and with another 15K, you could make it legal in CA.

I would like an Exige... right now I own a Lotus Esprit... and the next car I would move to is an Exige or Elise Sport 190.
those cars do 0-60 in 4.1 secs. i don't know why the specs posted by the first couple of guys are so slow. normally the car is around 1300lbs, i believe.
Someone told me that one guy got his exige in, by the way of florida, probably because they didn't check epa/etc. certs. and then he registered in texas where as long as you have a title, they'll transfer the registeration.
But thats still long ways from california.
The other car i'm waitin' for, which will probably be imported, and will most likely replace the esprit is the Lotus M250. which is around 2200 lbs or so, and has a 240hp v6 motor. 0-60 in 4.8 secs, etc. Lotus probably will stop building esprits in 2 or 3 years, it seems, from reading posts by non-lotus employees on an esprit mailing list.
But m250 is supposed to be the 'official' replacement for the esprit. but who knows what will lotus do.
The Elise is a pretty car. they are made out of aluminum, and the aluminum isn't welded, but glued and bolted together. Saw 3 or 4 of them beginnin' of april when i went to london for 5 days.

thefatman, i know of a guy who supposobly (sp? how you spell it guys) has an exige comming any month now. I think he brought it in threw the show and race program that allows you to import the vehicle as long as you don't drive more then something like 1500 miles a year on it, and it is strictly for race and show. I have a bunch of articles about the actual requirements at home in various porsche and ferrari magazines i frequently read. If your really interested in more info about it i can do some searching threw them (which i do about 1x a week anyways
