Looking for a CL

I am looking to buy an acura CL or cl type s but had a few questions. What should I look for when buying one of these? Do these trannys fail as much as the TL tranny? Is it the same one? If I bought a car with under 100k would the dealer replace the tranny for free? I am just a little lost on the whole extended warranty deal. SO what should I look for when buying a used one?

why don't u just buy a 6spd? you can find one. it's not that hard to find. there's one on BM. i think it's abp 6spd. 6spd FTW.

Exactly^

Look for an 03 (the only year they made manuals) 6-speed and you won't have any problems.

I also forgot to say this. Can i call my acura deale, give them the VIN # and ask if the car is still covered under the tranny replacement plan? Also, once they are replaced, do they last?

if money is such a big deal that you won't spend a few grand more for a 6 speed then YOU CAN'T AFFORD the auto. one broken transmission not covered under warranty and you are out the difference from an 01 or 02 auto and a 03 6 speed. and yes, if it has under 100,000 you can get the tranny replaced, but what if you buy it with 92K and tranny doesn't go 'till 112K? you are out a couple of grand fixing a car that is only work 7K or 8K. the new trannys (replaced after feb 05 i believe, look in the tranny problem thread to confirm this date) are better, but there is no way to know for sure that you got a 'good' tranny.

imo, unless you can find a knowledgeable seller who can show you proof the car has a newly replaced tranny of the new design, you are wasting your money. and if you think the 6 speeds are hard to find, just imagine how hard it is to find the car i just described.

look man-I went through the same decision and almost made a 10K mistake. think about it-why are you looking at an acura? let me guess: reliability and affordable luxury with a touch of sportiness right? if you get an auto-tragic cl, you are throwing out reliability and affordable repairs right out the window. A year or 2 ago the difference between the 6 speeds and the autos in price was huge-now it's way less. I bought mine with 60K from a DEALER for 15K and I know you could do better if you look around

well I was looking at multiple cars and found one 03 CL 6 speed for 11k OBO. It has 90k on it and is silver on black. How much do you guys think i should offer him for the car? I want to spend as LITTLE as possible to get a nice car like this. I also am looking at an 02 TL with 65k miles for 8900 OBO. Just like you guys said about the tranny issues with the autos, the TL is under warranty for sure isnt it.. But i am more interested in the 03 cl

I dunno, after reading through the transmission forum several times it seems most dealers did goodwill replacements, and if they didn't do that most people only had to pay for labor, which was $700-$800. I'm not all that concerned about the transmission anymore, and I've got 93k on my car.

There's a few people on the board with over 150k miles and their CL's are running great. I was going to sell mine, but I figured I love the car, so I decided to hold on to it. I would only sell if someone offered me book for it, but there's not a lot of people on the market for CL's it seems.

Can we see links to these cars? Both of them seem like very good deals.

On the other hand...you can be rock'n a 2002 auto like me.

Tranny replaced at 70k under warranty. 151k and counting, no problems!

Personally, i'd go with the 6 speed CL (i'm a little biased since i have one just like that one only w/ a bunch of mods). $11,500 isn't a bad price for what you're getting, I'd definitely check to see what the maintence records are like because it's about due for a timing belt, water pump, etc.

Go search all over the internet. Creigslist, autotrader, cars.com etc....
DON'T GET A CAR FROM EBAY!!! My buddy got an Evo off of ebay and when he got back home from pickin it up he had major issues. Ended up spending $1500 for a whole bunch of crap.
Also call all acura dealers in ur area and set a request for them to call u when they get cl-s' in because the lease on a lot those cars r comin up.
Good luck

I’ll sell you mine for the right price. It’s in near perfect condition. 96K miles. 70K of which are HWY miles cruising at 80mph between Birmingham and Lafayette. Anything in the interior and exterior that shows wear has been replaced and the mechanicals are impeccable. It even has a brand new clutch assembly, motor mounts, clutch fluid system, new transmission, you name it. I even replaced the leather on the driver seat and steering wheel. I have all records to back it up. Every car moron who rides in it asks if it is an 05 or 06. I reply with, “no I just maintain the shit out of it”. Look at my sig for the details. Don’t even bother with a 12K offer though. I don’t want to sell it that bad and it is more than likely that if you do get one for that price you will be buying 1-3K in problems and time or more. You will get what you pay for.

good deals can sometimes be hard to find, but when you find one you had better get it quick. a few weeks ago i picked up an 01 typeS sundance gold 59K miles, immaculate condition, dealer serviced and dealer replaced tranny less than a year ago (i have all paperwork) all for $11K. to me id rather get an 01 or 02 with low(er) miles than an 03 with 100K+ miles.

well what about the TL i saw on auto trader with 57k miles for 8900 OBO. It was an 02. I know that it had tranny stuff BUT it would be under warranty for a while and most likely would still be under warranty when I sold it..
