Look what I did today...

I've been toying with the idea of silver trim on parchment for awhile now so today I did the deed. I got a pair of console pieces from a member on the Black Market so I didn't screw up my originals and did it like this:

What I used:
1.) gray primer 2.) chrome paint 3.) satin clear (to offset the chrome paint shine)

Primed

Painted

Now at this point, I do NOT like how shiney it is so I'm a little leary but hoping the clear does what I want it to do.

Cleared

Nope, didn't do what I wanted it to do plus the paint fisheyed (I think because there were open silicone products in the garage). Oh well, they aren't my originals so no big deal.

Before

After

Now I gotta just redo and perfect it. I want them to match the gear shift plate perfectly. Once it's perfected, I might get brave and do these too...

We'll see though. I don't want to have to replace them since you can't just buy the trim pieces. Maybe you guys can talk me into it!

Enjoy and let me know what you think!

A little different, but probably because I'm not used to seeing it.
Doesn't look bad though.

That's what I was going for but it didn't turn out just right. I'm gonna try it again with different paint. I used the clear satin to try and offset the shiney silver and to reduce the chance of scratches in the paint. The clear just didn't do what I wanted.

Great project, but with that interior what about trying to match the leather or the black console. Silver trim just doesn't go with the parchment IMO.

If it were mine, I'd look into doing black trim and getting the black floormats, or doing the trim in parchment color to match the leather. Just ideas.

I had the same interior in my first 03 CLS 6MT and my first try to improve it was to add the matching wood dash kit to the console. It looked better but was still fake wood.
My second try was selling it and getting a CLS 6MT with black/silver!

If we can get some of the red x's fixed, this would be an excellent thing to the DYI section. What do yous guys think?

Dude, you're on a "bump all Lord Helmet's old threads rampage!"

If you want a do-it-yourself, I'll try and put something together but it's gonna take some time cause I've been real busy.

BTW, the painted pics in this thread is with the incorrect color. I re-did them with the Duplicolor Ultrasilver instead......

I like it. I'll take painted plastic over faux wood or marble anyday.

How much trouble were the door pieces to remove and paint?

Aside from removing all the trim in the back (had to remove the backseat), it was all relatively painless really.

If you search "panel" or "panels" you will probably find several posts about me talking about it. It's not that hard to do.

Or, if you wait, I will try and do that write-up Ryan wants me to do. Then it will be in the DIY/Official Information thread at the top of the forum.

I'll see what I can do guys.

Automotive grade carpet cleaner, pre-soak, and steam clean them. You can also scrub the snot out of them with your cleaner, then take them over to your local power car washing facility and blast them. Get a wet/dry vac, try to get as much water out as possible, let dry in the sun, then admire your handy work.
