You are probably just hearing the normal ticking that every CL does. Can you hear it from inside the car when driving? or just when the hoods open

Depends on the mileage. If you have 20k miles, they may cover it but if you have 60K+ they probably won't.

Depends on how loud is it. Like spdy said, can you hear it from inside the car or just when the hood is open?

Yeah, that ticking is the sound of the fuel injectors firing away--if that's the noise you're hearing, it's normal as he said.

unless your hearing it in the car, or the idle doesn't sound smooth, you need not worry.

i can hear it from inside the car at idle and low rpm but goes away under power , maybe because of the road noise and the exhuast.

It may not be the lifters. Is it a ticking noise you hear with the ac & radio off at idle from inside the car?
If it is, it might be something called a purge solinoid valve. It's mounted on the firewall which is why your hear it from inside the car. What it does I don't know, but mine was ticking & replaced & the ticking went away.

Im glad you brought that up. Cuz mine only makes the ticking noise when the engine is warmed up, not when its cold, so I would think that rules out the injectors. Does yours do that too, Ironhead. And at idle its a very slow tick. I would think if it was the lifters or valves you would hear a lot of ticks per second.

Im only at 40k miles, Im gonna have to look into the PSV. Funny thing is I swear i can hear it through the intake manifold, not near the firewall.

I may be wrong but I didn't think over-head-cam engines had lifters.

I think he's right. OHC engines may have lifters but.... I don't think the CLS engines have lifters.

J32 don't have hydrolic lifters, they have roller-rockers.
roller rockers don't need to be ajusted as frequently as direct rubbing rockers (every 30K miles), but J32's at 60K miles should be re-ajusted (we inspected a few for fun on the 60K maintenace inspection and they all needed to be ajusted).

the purge solenoid valve never opens at idle or acceleration

some injectors are noisier than others, and louder ones sometime sound near highly gapped rockers on 4 cyl engines

Theres no lifters in OHC motors. The whole concept of OHC motor is to get rid of pushrods and lifters. Lifters are only found in inblock cam motors like vettes, camaro, etc.

Ok now I'm not sure about this one because, I think my 93 Ledgen 3.2 Type II was OHC and it had Lifters. I think ?

Yes there are lifters in an ohc engine. They don't look anything like a ohv lifter but they do ride on the cam and transfer rotational motion of the cam to open and close the valves. Most of the DOHC Toyota engines I build have them but the the sohc engine in our Acura's have only adjustable rocker arms between the cam and valve, no lifters or pushrods.

Sometims V8 terminology just doesn't directly translate into import language.

You are talking about Cam Followers. They may look like lifters but not classified as one. People sometime call them bucket lifters, i dunno why. but BMW is a big fan of using them.

Most likely your valves need adjusting. I had the same noise on mine. Warrantly does not cover it, and it will cost you about 300 to 400 dollars to get the valves adjusted.

Warranty should cover it, but Acura considers it as maintenance work. I went through a whole discussion with Acura Corporate over this. Bunch of punks IMO... Valves should not need to be adjusted at 30k miles.

they SAY they should be done at 1xx,000 miles, but really should be done every 30k-60k miles depending on how hard you drive your car.

Well, depends on your dealer really. If they want to cover the valve adjustment they will. I had them done on the old car under warranty. Had to fight for it though.
