Legend coupe better than the CL????

I seen a 95' gold legend coupe on my way to work and I got to thinking, if acura made it 260 horseys, put 17's type s wheels on it, sport shift or even the six speed and and made some other cosmetics changes, would anyone buy it????

I had a Red 91 Legend LS coupe that I sold last year. That car was awesome. Rock solid, no squeaks and bullet proof after 100k miles of my zany street antics. If it had the CL engine in it...I would still own it Wish my CL was as well built.

This is my last American Car. I am going back to japanese built cars from now on.

I still like the CL though but I just don't trust it like I could my old Legend.

My '89 LS Coupe had many rattles at 65k and at 50K I had to replace all of the weather stripping and then again at 90k. IMO, this was one of my worst vehicles in terms of quality I have owned. Must have gotten a bad one...

Hrmmm, my '88 Prelude 4WS had to have two AC compressors before 70k, must have been a bad batch also...

But Scalbert, why do we keep coming back ? I too have a 1998 Accord coupe V6EX and tranny went out at 78,000 miles. Then, what do I do, I go out and buy an Acura CLS............I think its time to look else where, like Nissan/Infiniti !

I had a 91 Legend Coupe and the overall build quality was definitely better then the CL.
The car ran great and had 110,000 on it when I sold it in June of 2000 for my first CL.

I think I actually preferred the body style of that car to the new CL.
But, like Soopa said, the technology was getting dated and I was drawn to the CL by the 260HP engine and all the new electronic toys.

My coworker has one w/a 6 spd. It was actually kinda interesting comparing our cars next to each other in the parking lot.

Sorry about that. We just noticed how similar the interior and dimensions of both cars were. We haven't had a performance comparison yet.

LOL!

I think your lookin in the wrong direction buddy.

Honda/Nissan... same shit. They build massive amounts of cars in a short period of time... quantity over quality.

Seriously... Nissan doesnt have shit in terms of quality/reliability next to Honda. They might not be worse... but they certainly aint better.

If their trannies even last... their still CRAP for trannies that just eat up all the power.

At least Honda makes an attempt at giving us a slush box that is fun to drive.

Well, the last Legend's had 230HP, a 6-speed and 16" wheels, so I suppose we can call it close enough.

Personally, I think the 3.2CL Type S 6-speed is a better overall package than the Legend Coupe, however, the Legend Coupe is hands down a better looking car.

Well, if you want to get technical.. Acura is an American name. There is no Acura in Japan, only Honda. Now yes, we all know that Honda owns Acura... but keep in mind that the CL is an American/Canadian car only. There is no Japanese equivilent to the CL. So on a technicality, you could call the CL an Amercian car. Built here and only sold here.

It's obvious that it's not built as well as the Legend's were. It's a shame too. Things are supposed to improve over time.....

Agreed

Just remember the age difference. The newest Legends are now 7 years old. 230hp is still pretty decent but I am sure many Legend owners would give up a body part for VTEC. It's just a progession of technology, no reason to get angry that Acura is continually upping the stakes. Also consider the price differences, a loaded Legend Coupe costs near 40K, my 94 is titled at 42500. The CL's are getting a lot more for less money...which is exactly what the customer wants to see.

I guess I will cry myself to sleep thinking of the bimmerish styling, self-closing doors, and roll down rear windows. :P

YUP.....All you had to do was get the door about 1” from the frame and it “pulled” the door closed for you.

Sounds stupid, but I thought it was a cool feature.

Legend Coupe doors are "magnetic" you close them 98% of the way and it sucks in the last 1/4 inch. Acura designers figured it was "unluxury" to slam the larger coupe doors so they built this feature in.

Did I mention power/memory tilting steering wheel that gets out of the way when you take the key out?

They also had seat belt “presenters”.
When you closed the door a mechanical arm swung the buckle forward for you to easily grab hold of.

See Shawn knows whats up! I will gladly upgrade to a new Acura, maybe the next generation. I plan on driving the Legend into the ground until something equally impresses me. Nothing beats that new car feeling.

That is my biggest gripe about my car

I think it will be a must on my next car. For now, I just deal with it.

Sweet! I think that's a great feature. My passengers never seem to shut their doors all the way; I always have to lean way over and re-shut it. I wonder how many people got their fingers lopped off with that feature though

The auto closers don't increase the risk of squished fingers. In fact they probably decrease it because you learn to not slam the doors like I have to on my CL.

The other minor but HUGE feature I miss is the tilting headrests. I am short and would like the head rests tilted a bit closer to my head than in the CL.

Oh and for those that asked. I do consider the CL an "American Car" since it is an NA only Marque and is built right here a lazy american slob just like me. I wouldn't buy a car I built.

This should not turn into an American build quality bashing session. Just consider this, does it make any business sense to ship a less than "perfect" product overseas? Americans are always in the over-production mindset, if one is flawed we will build another to replace it. The Japanese try to make sure that every one they build is correct the first time. When you don't have unlimited natural resources it can change your prespective on things.

you make a good point; but you may have overstated your argument by implying the US has unlimited natural resources. We are heavily dependant on other countries and by no means are we completely self sufficient. This is a large reason we are so involved with middle east poltics for example. They have something we need badly. I agree that the Japanese probably utilize their available resources in a more efficient manner, but in addition to this, they seem to have a higher sense of personal responsibilty for the quality of their products. Here's an example; For an american to get fired, it can be traumatic and financially devastating. For the same to happen to a Japanese worker it is not only financially devstating, traumatic etc, it is often a disgrace to their entire family, sometimes driving them to suicide out of shame. This has changed somewhat recently but for the most part is still their mindset. It's just a different culture.
