Know the importance of PCV?

I know PCV relieves positive pressure in the crankcase, but how does that effect performance and what happens if this hose is blocked or kinked and doesn't allow the pressure to release?

Yes the seals will leak for sure, I had that happen on a previous car. Cam seals, crank seal, rear main seal. The best thing to do for performance is to get a oil catch can. This will trap any of the oil in a reservoir so it doesnt go into your engine.

Damn, I fixed the hose so it wasn't pinched anymore and the power band through mid throttle drastically changed. It lost quite a bit of low end jump but gained pep on the mid range RPMs. Strange...

When the cars not pulling a vacuum, midrange throttle to full throttle, it's flowing alot of air from the crankcase into the intake manifold. So the boost of power in the midrange is probably due to the engine having more oxygen to burn, than if the engines pcv system was working. At the upper revs, the engines crankcase pressure is increasing and causing a drop in performance. You could just put a breather filter on the hose that is connected to the pcv valve, and plug the fitting on the throttle body. However, this will not be beneficial to the condition of your oil, it will cause condesation and acid to form inside your engine creating sludge.

The more vaucuum you can pull on the engine, the more power you can derive from it. This is why race cars run mechaical vacuum pumps. I think that Jeg's sells vacuum pump.

Actually, I will be putting the kit back in after breakin, dyno, unichip and 1/4 runs. Wanna see what kind of numbers I'll get b4 puttin the juice back in.

Anyone try this yet? You can get the breather and plugs at any local parts store.
Something else done on the race circuit is tapping into the exhaust system to evacuate the gases from you crankcase. Kits are available at Jegs and Summit Racing .

Yeah, talked to my pops about that and he said that he used to tap the exhaust system which helps vacume the pressure giving a little more performance, also helps with releasing the hot air out through the exhaust and not recycling it back through the intake. It also burns up the oil more efficiently than spitting it back into the engine.

I'm sure b/c of this stronger vacume effect, you will have to check your oil levels a little more often than normal but it's probably worth it as the amount you will lose is probably minimal.
