K&N Drop in filter
K&N Drop in filter
Ive searched everywhere for this and didnt seem to have an actual picture of the k&n in someones car.... i saw on some guys tl, they didnt have the top on the air filter? So if i got the K&N, do I just bolt it on and not put back the cover/lid of the filter box?? thanks in advanced
wow....thats as much as the ebay CAI......i like the sound...but alot of people are saying the cai are way too loud... so im debating between getting the k&n or getting the ebay cai.....
It can be really hard to get it in there and get a good seal. The paper filters are tapered on the side closest to the engine which makes it easy to put in. The F&N filter is the same thickness all the way around and it can make it hard to get the engine side pins locked through the holes while maintaining a good seal. Mine started leaking after a couple months because the seal wasn't quite right and was making a humming sound at idle.

wow urs started leaking? i never heard that happen to anyone....
I didn't have the issues that TheWeez had. My Icebox was on backorder so I picked up a K&N. Two days later the Icebox came in the mail. My K&N was used for about a week if your interested in it.
I have the K&N drop in filter in my stock box with the lower res. removed. 10x better and sounds deeper.
When I removed the lower resonator box I kept the rubber seal in the bottom of the box and attached a apox. 6" x 8" .032 alum sheet metal shield rolled 3/4the way around that lower hole. This is attached to the rubber seal which is firmly secures to the bottom of the stock air box. If you can picture it its almost like a 6" tube that pulls cold air from the lower fender of the front of the car but the shield actually blocks any moisture that might come up from the bottom of the car in case its pouring or I drive through a puddle.
I studied comptech's ice box design and pretty much used the same principles they did in designing their ice box. Google search Comptech Ice box pic to get an idea what I'm talking about.
I've had it in there for over a year and I have washed and oiled my K&N filter 2 times since and for the money and power it is def. the easiest and best sounding intake. Plus the fact it looks completely stock from the engine bay.
P.S. I've had no problems with the seal on the K&N filter in the stock box. Just make sure you install in right and there will be no problems.

cbus, u dont have the pic of ur setup by anychance? it soudns interesting but the tubing / sheet metal part was confusing.... and do u think the filters make a sound diff.. oem vs k&n? some people say filters dont make a diff?
I knew someone was going to ask for it...ha. Sorry no I don't have a picture handy. I will try to take a picture soon. I need to change my oil in the next couple days so I will try to take a pic then.
The only reason I think my set up sounds different (deeper growl) is because of the lower resonator box is removed.
Here is a pic of the Comptech ice box. Mine looks similiar to this..but with just a alum tube bottom instead of the black tube shown...

Here is a Stock Air Box w/ lower resonator taken apart (this is not mine..I google searched this pic)

To the right you will see the stock filter inside top of the stock airbox. In the middle you will see the bottom of the stock airbox (its upside down in the pic). That hole w/ rubber seal is where I have the alum. attached. Then finally to the far left is the stock lower resonator (this is to be removed completely). Does this kinda make sense what I'm talking about?
Hope this helps.

Oh yea..mine did only when you really get on it though. K&N breathes alot better.
I had a AEM CAI on before this and this set up is alot better. Cold air and a good filter is the key.

Since you have the resonator removed already...the hp difference between the stock filter and K&N will prob. only be only 1-2 hp. I personally can tell a difference if I get on the throttle 3/4 of the way cruising about 20 mph.
It just seems like the K&N breathes better and the car pulls harder/longer.

nope. This is what i have made... it just fits.

I had to cut out the engine cover to fit the pipe but i painter the clamp black so you can't see it

I plan on making a box around it and make a scoop in the fender for a ram air. I'v seen a VW with a side mounted scoop but i'll mold mine into the fender
