just finished V1 remote install
just finished V1 remote install
Just finished hardwiring my V1 and the remote.
I tried the remote in several places before running the wires behind the dash.
- tried between the seat heater switches. It was way to low in the car, had to take eyes of road completely.
- tried it in soopa spot, on the steering column. It blocked my view of the lower dash controls and didn't think it looked good there.
- tried just using the V1 display. Too much red at night, and also had to look too much away from the road. (I have my V1 on the right side (passenger) of the rear mirror)
Found a great spot, imho. I used some fun-tac (3 pieces) and stuck it under the lip/visor of the dash. I put it in front of the little green key icon on the right dash gauge. I can see the whole remote, don't have to take eyes of road to read it, doesn't block any dash gauges, and the mute button is easy to hit.
For wiring, I pulled the right side of the dash away, ran the wire through the ac duct, through the back of the dash, and over to the left fuse panel. Only about 2 inches of the wire shows, but it is tucked into the crevice/corner of the dash and the wire color is about an exact match of the dash.
The only problem I ran into is when I pulled the dash away, the little metal clips popped off and fell in. I pulled out the console side bowling ball trim and was able to easily retrieve them. It also made it easier to snake the wires through!
Upon further inspection, those clips were never on all the way on the dash piece to begin with! Just a tiny bite on the edge of the plastic tabs! I only found 2 clips for 3 plastic tabs, but the last plastic tab had no marks on it at all, maybe there were only 2 clips??
Anyway, looks and works great.
Thanks to snook789 on the TL forum for pictures and instructions on pulling the dash panel apart, and to Black_Pride for the pictures and instructions for removing the center trim.

I was thinking of running the wire in the gap between the gauges and dash panel. But it looked like a tight fit for the phone cable, and the edges are sharp and might eventually slice through the cable. Also thought that the gap might be there for a reason and I shouldn't screw with it.
I found the remote to be perfect where Shawn has it as it feels integrated with the rest of the instument panel! I don't have to strain to look around for the radar to see what's going on, it's always there. Even if I can't hear it I always notice the red Lights.
