Just changed my oil.....
Just changed my oil.....
I just changed my oil after 6500 miles (12500 miles are on the car). It was filthy! I use Mobil-1 oil and filters. It sure is performing much better now!
For you guys out there thinking that synthetic will allow you to go more than 6000 miles, forget it. I was very surprised at how dirty it was. And the weather here in the Dallas area has been pretty good this year! Maybe it's my driving habits.

YOU just raised a very good point about all of the stuff that gets left in the oil!
Granted the "great" oils will suspend a lot of dirt and mung, but after a lot of time and/or miles go by, the oil lets acids and other corrosives get loose -- this damages the engine. (Dirty oil + low miles + a long time is not great for an engine...)
I would rather change the oil at 2000 miles if a year was up and the oil looked dark, than poking my head in the sand like an ostrich.
I don't know about you (or the other members here), but my car is pretty dirty during the cat. warm-up phase!
I'll take that cheap insurance called frequent oil changes.

If you send a sample of your oil to Amsoil, they will analyze it and compare it to new Havoline 30w. The test data will show synthetic oil out performs new petro-oil after 15k miles. I know someone in Miami who has gone 20k miles but changes the filter every 7k. I use Amsoil 5w30 but change after 6k. Old habits of 3k changes are hard to break.

where did you get the mobil1 filter at? Also STP filters are built exactly the same and cost $5. I use Amsoil filters ($7) which we took apart and will add the data to the below page. http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml

I got the filter, as well as the oil, at AutoZone. The filter number is M-104 ($10) and I use 5W-30 oil ($5/qt).
My next oil change will be at 6000 miles (or 18500 total). I would have changed at 6000 this last time, but I've been too busy getting moved into my new house. Everything I've read about the Mobil-1 oil and filter has been positive. But, maybe I should read more about other filters like the STP so I can save a few bucks!

Actually, it's not so much the oil as the filter...Think of it this way..would you rather spend an extra $30 every few months or would you want to have your car only last 100k rather than 150K? It's the little things that add up to BIG things...but that's just my opinion.

I'm not stupid, it's just that I have never done this before. I have always changed the oil and filter at the same time.
Yes just unscrew it, your'll loose about a quarter qt. The correct way (but very anal) is to fill the new filter w/oil and then screw it on. Anyway you do it just start the car, let run for a minute and then watch the dip stick and fill the pan up.
