JULY 2002 MOTORTREND Quotes SAD NEWS FROM ACURA!
I just received my July issue of motor trend and in the news section i quote this from MT on page 32.
"The next NSX will be a 3.5L DOHC i-VTEC V-6 powering the rear wheels and an Integrated Motor Assist electric system powering all four wheels."
"Acura's apparently decided to concentrate on their entry-level section of the lux market. Look for the next-gen RL to retain front-drive and a v6-no V8."
LAST BUT NOT LEAST OUR BELOVED CL IS NO MORE!
On page 33 First drive of the G35 Motortrend quotes:
"In today's market, fashionable coupes represent a certain gamble for automakers. Acura, for one, is said to be ready to abandon its 3.2CL coupe when the new TL deputs next year."
WHY ACURA WWWWWHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
I can understand the CL going bye-bye (actually I can't) but, no plans for V8s????? WTF!!!!

first of all that quote that spells the demise of the CL is old news, a repost, sorry. it sucks but it was inevitable.
but about the NSX, acura/honda needs to get its head out of its ass. hell they way things are going there will end up being 2 cars by acura the RSX and the NSX. all hope is not lost tho for acura. look at infiniti and lexus. infiniti has come back from the brink of extinction to become a respectable car manufacturer. and lexus' respectability just keeps growing. so there is hope, but it requires something acura/honda doesnt make alot of, new ideas. maybe its a coincidence but last time i checked, Lexus and Infiniti both have a 4+ litre V8 in their flagship luxo sedan and meanwhile acura keeps to it's 240 hp 3.5 litre non-VTEC V6 in the RL. what a bunch of numb nuts.

If the new NSX is going to truly have a V6 and not a V8, I just have a feeling its not going to be $100k. I just think they will be aiming the car at the standard Porsche Carrera. At $100k, thats basically 911 Turbo money.....what would you rather have? With that, I believe the new NSX will be in the $70-$75k neighborhood-we'll know soon enough.

I can see if they added a V8 the price would go UP, but if they are still keeping a V6, the price will still be $80k-90k.

True, my forecast might be a bit low.....but I think it will be cheaper, maybe $80k like you said. Is the new NSX going to be all aluminum, I'm not quite sure?

Acura makes most of its revenue from the MDX and the TL.
The MDX needs no RWD obvioulsy and it needs no V8 in a hurry. ANd with the rumors about a 3.8 liter V6, the MDX is not going to be suffering from being underpowered.
The TL is competing with cars like the I35 and the ES300 which are all FWD and have less power than the TL in its Type S version.
So if Acura decides to not have a RWD platform ready (no RWD RL) and no V8, that means they have not decided to make the big decision that Infiniti did with the new RWD platforms (Infiniti already had a V8 from the previous Q45 cars).
As far as the NSX, obviously Honda has been losing money off of this car for a long time and does not seem to be bothered if that continued to be so. After all, this is an "image car". THe NSX right now is still considered an exotic by most, so they dont have to fix that any time soon.
So I guess that's it. No RWD, no V8 and possibly a look at AWD since they alread have the VTM4 technology from the MDX. But yes in hybrid technology and to tell you the truth, I dont mind a V6 plus an electric engine for the sum to equal V8 power. I actually probably would prefer that for its better gas consumption results as long as it would not affect the price. Which is probably impossible for now.

That's terrible news...
I love my car, as do most owners here. I guess Acura will do what they think is right for their business model. Too bad they don't let the members here a chance to redesign the CL.
I think we'd do a damn good job! In fact, it'd be good to compile what we think would make the CL a seller and just for grins, send it to Acura. It'd be fun I think. Granted they'd NEVER listen, but still...
How many people are going to jump ship and go with something else? Shit... I'm gonna own two cars that will no longer be made, Olds. Alero and now the CL-S.
Oh well... I still love my car.

I wish Acura would make a convertible out of the CL and price it between the Toyota Solara and BMW convertibles. There really aren't any quality convertibles in this price range. And make it handle too. The solara is too much of a crusier and BMW too expensive. I'd trade up to that in a second!

Jeez, i have a knack for picking cars that go bye bye :
Peugeot 505 - The brand isn't even available in the U.S. anymore.
Renault Alliance - Same as above
Audi 5000 - as soon as i bought it, people started driving them through garages ! Talk about losing your resale value.
Merkur xr4ti - 2 of em, model extinct after 4 years. Total fiasco.
Taurus SHO - 2 of em, model extinct.
Funny thing, is when i bought the Acura i felt i was finally buying something that would stay around for awhile. I'll be sure to notify everyone of my next choice
