JTC Short Shifter Install Question

Hi,

I just bought and installed my jtc short shifter, I ran into a couple of problems. The hole in the rod that connects to the front of the shifter was too small to get the jtc bolt through. I had to remove the oem rubber gasket/washer thing to get the jtc bolt through. Is that what I'm suppose to do? Another problem I am having is with the shifter, when shifting it back to neutral, it does not go back to the center is just stays in that position unless i move it there by hand. It does not spring back to the center like my stock shifter did. It is very notchy. I wonder if they sent me the wrong part. please, any advice will help.

Thank you

Yes this is what you are supposed to do. I had the same dilemma and I emailed "Tommy" of JTC and he said that it what we are supposed to do.

I'm not too sure about your second question though. But mine is also very notchy. sounds like yours is even more notchy

side note: i found it incredibly frustrating that it didn't come with any instructions whatsoever, not even on their sketchy website too. I had never done this install before (zero experience) and had to use a prelude installation guide off another forum as a guide.

do you think new bushings will help with the notchiness ?

I did the same, i should take a video so i can compare with you and others who have this short shifter. I think the ball on the bottom of the shifter is too big, making it really tight.

I emailed and called jtc but no response. Will wait a couple of days before i file a claim through paypal. I am pretty upset because the tightness and stiffness sucks.

They seem to be hit and miss with emails. I have a feeling the whole business is just run by one guy and I'm guessing he's a busy guy

I got an email back from one rep, she told me she will forward my email to Tommy. The only thing i worrying about is that installed the metal locking piece, if i had to uninstall it i think it will be a pain.

When moving shifter out of gear or side to side it does not move freely back to the center. Shouldnt go back to the center? In the video it look pretty smooth but that because i just came back from a drive. If its the first time I'm driving it that day it is pretty stiff and requires more effort than I think it should have. Does anyone else have this problem?

these instructions should suffice since the JTC is a direct copy of Pspec

I wouldn't say Freely, but it is considerably looser than yours.

Yeah, something's definitely wrong with yours. Mine moves freely back to the center regardless where it comes out of...

I'll post up a vid later today or this weekend.

I think I was sent the wrong part. The ball on the bottom of the shifter is just too big. I am having trouble of contacting them. I am pretty disappointed in the service so far. Worst case scenario can I file a claim through paypal?

I'd give it a day or so for them to try and get back to your emails. I had to wait a couple days for a response.

They could definitely do a better job in communicating with their customers imo. I was just as frustrated as you were

Just wondering, did you shorten the shift boot or replace it with a shorter one? I find that it is too long and gets stuck in the shifter. It has a hole in it already from being stuck in the shifter while changing gears

Mike7792, I sent a "firm" email this morning and Tommy called me personally this morning. He said he just "got back in town 15 min ago". Anyways I explained the problem I was having. He told me that he will send me a new shifter today. He said I can check if i got the wrong one. He said to look at the rod that screws to the shift knob. If it has 5 holes than it is correct. I think i have 6 which is for either a prelude or another car. I haven't check for sure yet. I will look when i get home

Im still using the original shift boot I did not shorten. I'm going to buy a new shift boot. I didn't think it will create a hole in the boot though. I will remove mine asap. Thanks mike7792.

I will update when I get my new shifter installed next week. Im excited to feel how it is suppose to feel.

Good to hear ! hope it works out for you.

The boot ripped cuz it got stuck on the corner between the shifter console (?) and the part on the short shifter where you adjust the shift height (which has sharp corners)

Thanks Mike 7792. Just got tracking for it too. just need to check again when usps updates

So I check the shifter and i have 8 holes, but i checked the bottom part of the shifter and that has 6 holes. I'm guess he was talking about that one.

I thinking of get a cloth shifter like in the new civic si. and a slightly heavier shift knob.

Well yesterday I received the the second shifter and it looked identical to the first one. I went ahead an installed it and I got the same result. It was stiff and notchy. It would not go back to the center. I am annoyed by this. I installed the oem shifter and it went back to normal. I'm not sure if I'm getting the correct part or the wrong part. I assume it is wrong part. I compared the ball of shifter with the oem vs. jtc and the oem one is smaller. I'm assuming that's where my problem is. Because once install the locking plate, the shifter gets stiff, stuck, and notchy.

Can anyone post a video of the shifters. I will post pics of the two shifter I got.

Also if you can check the number of holes you have in both rods of the shifter.

Thanks in advance.

So I got to spoke with them today and the woman told me that they sent the correct shifter out. I don't think I am installing it incorrectly. It is a straight forward installation process. I just don't know what to do anymore. Could my shifter cable bushings play a factor in the stiffness?

If anyone has pictures of the Short shifter or video it will help a lot.

Just a suggestion, check the bushings and also check the friction of the cables, see if they have too much tension. Sometimes over tightening during installation results in that kind of shifter tightness.

I'm sure you've checked this but did you apply adequate grease to the ball at the bottom the shifter? Like Rondog said you're getting too much friction at some point. There are only certain places where this can occur so I would check all the moving parts. Let me know if you have enough grease there. I can try to take a pic of mine if that helps.

I made sure there was a lot of grease. I ended up grinding down the locking metal piece. I shaved about a paper thin slice off. It worked perfectly. I was surprised that a paper thin slice of extra material can make such a difference.

Hey ooooooo, I got real frustrated with the notchiness of my shifter and how hard it was to shift in and out of gears so I bought some Corsport Cable shifter bushings. I installed it last night and it has taken the notchiness down quite a bit. It's smoother and I require less effort to change gears.

worth looking into if you're still having problems.

The overly knotchy behavior has always been the biggest complaint about that thing and the main reason many have stayed away from it.

Hmm mine isn't notchy with the pspec ss and hybrid racing shifter bushings.

I did see a pspec for sale on v 6 p classifieds section for a 98-02 accord. I almost thought about buying and reselling for a profit but thought I would let someone else get it.

I just pmed the seller. Will see what he says.

I looked it up. He has it listed for the 98-02 accord, but I just noticed he is running a h22 engine with a 5 speed manual. Will that pspec even work with our cars?

The shifter bushings on the transmission can be the issue. I had a very very slight bend in one of my shift cables at the end where it connected to the transmission and they had to replace the cables as the shifter wouldn't go back to the center position as it should by itself. Fairly common when people are trying to get the cables over the new solid bushings and ruins everything. Shop said they often see the solid bushings wear out the mount points requiring the transmission to be pulled to have them replaced at a huge cost.

Thanks Weez and everyone else for the help. I found out the problem. I think this batch of short shifters from JTC had very slight measurement issues. I had to shave about a paper thin slice off the locking plate and it was perfect.

I just want to warn everyone with dealing with JTC. There products are very nice other than having slight fitting issues. The material use is very solid. Tommy at JTC is very helpful with giving me ideas to make it fit. The problem with JTC is the customer service response time. The response time took forever. The only time I got a response is when I threaten to take matters in my own hands. That is the only problem with them.

The product seems to made to be a little universal. Tommy told me that the short shifter for the CL is also used in the RSX.

Another thing I thought was annoying was that earlier this year I messaged them about pricing and if they had them in stock. They did, but recommend me to wait for their 5% promotion deal they were going to do in 2 months. So of course I waited and when I got the 5% discount code, they increased the $25. I thought this was unfair and a little greedy.

The company is great as long as you don't have any problems with your order.

No, only option is pspec (if you can find one), jtc, or neuspeed. The jtc one is nice. just need to make some adjustments before installing.

I checked neuspeeds website and they only have products for audi and VW. I wouldn't have a problem if I had to modify the jtc one to fit but now im wondering if the rsx short shifter will fit our car? Im sure it would be alot easier to find one of those.
