Jens: Need some Advice/Input
Jens,
I'd really appreciate your input on this:
My car has 45k miles on it now. Up until it had about 35K miles, I never had to add any oil between 7500mile oil changes. Since aorund 35K, I've had to add up to 1qts about every 1500 miles (at which time i started doing 3000 mile oil changes)
The dealer at first told me "acura specs allow for upto 1qt. per 1000 miles" so they wouldn't do anything for me. I then took it to another garage that specializes in Acuras/Hondas, and they said they found oil in my throttle body and air intake, and said the dealer should replace my bad PCV valve under warranty.
So I call up my dealer, and the service manager tells me he spoke w/acura and his boss and they've agreed to do a "study" on my car, where they do an oil change and then I have to bring it in every 500 miles for the next 1500 miles to have it checked out. Then they'll report their findings back to acura and see if they'll do anything for me.
All sounds good until I drop my car off this morning, and was basically lectured on how there's nothing unusal with having to add 2 qts of oil every 3000 miles. I F'N DISAGREE!! Name 1 other person w/a car under 2 years old that has to add this much oil!! I can't find any!
It seems to me like my dealer is going to keep the stance that there's nothing wrong. And if they do find something wrong, I think they're going to try to pull it off as "my fault", because he also lectured me today on only getting my oil changed every 7500 miles. He basically told me I didn't read the owners manual. IT SAYS if you drive in Normal conditions MOST of the time, which I DO, follow the NORMAL intervals. (If I should have been getting it changed more often, WHY DIDN"T THEY TELL ME THAT EVERY TIME I BROUGHT IT TO THEM TO DO THE SERVICES??)
sorry for rambling, but i'm really p-o'd at my dealer right now, because I know they're feeding me lines of shit.
Any suggestions/input? Tell me if you see any cars using this much oil, or if there's anything else I should have the dealer look at.
Thanks!

The dealer just called me at work to let me know what they found.
They said my PCV Valve is fine, and that oil in the intake and throttle body is normal.
Is it really?
Also, should my PCV Valve ratttle when I shake it? It doesn't, and I thought that meant it was bad. The service manager said he didn't know if it should or not.

Sounds like you need to visit a different dealer. Isn't this the same one that gave you a bs line on your fogs? Surely people in your state can add fogs that are activated by a switch, so why would factory be different.....

I could go to Shawn S's dealer, but thats a little out of the way.
As far as the foglights go, I can't totally blame the dealer, it is the state law.

As far as what kind of tests they're doing... none.
When I first had them look at this problem at 37K, they said they wouldn't (unless it started using more than 1qt every 1000 miles.)
Now today they did do an oil change (at my expense) so they can start their "study" every 500 miles, but for all i know this consits of checking the dipstick by a certified mechanic.
Oh, and this is the same dealer that ran my car through the car wash with an open (tilted up) sunroof in the middle of winter. Why it was opened i'll never know...

OK- this has been a matter of contention with all car manufacturers. Be aware that any comments I make on this or any other matter on these boards is my own opinion and results from 30 years experience in the business. It does not represent in any way the "official" position, nor do I speak for Acura or Honda. That being said, it has been pretty much common in the auto industry to to consider the use of 1 qt of oil per 1000 miles as acceptable. The reason being that the engines are built a little "looser" to achieve every bit of gas mileage available. This is due to the strict mileage penaltys imposed by the government. The result- the rings have less friction and pass slightly more oil as do the valve guides and seals. The usual answer when someone has an oil consumption complaint is to do a "test". Basically this means filling the oil to the correct level then checking it every 250 miles and recording the loss. You should probably let your dealer do this. He can then report the results (whatever they may be) to his District Manager and they will determine what the next step should be. My advice is to let them take the necessary steps- if you are not satisfied with their determination, your next step would be to contact Acura Customer Service.
Being kind of old school, my personal opinion is that 1 qt per 1000 seems a little extreme. I have however, come to the conclusion that that is what the manufacturers are accepting and willing to stand up to, so we have to play by their rules.
Sorry about the length- didn't want to sound like it was a trivial question.

What I don't understand is why a dealer would blow off the compression, leak-down, and other diagnostics that work so well to find oil loss that is not ending up on the ground.
If enough oil goes through the catalytic converter, its poisioned and ruined.
This story reminds me of doctors and their HMOs. They wont pay for a preventative screening for some agressive cancer, but will pay when up when the patent finally is screeming and finds out they have a tumor. Then the bloody HMO will pay for the 100K hospital stay.
The new engines do need good gas mileage (yep, correcto), but the cylinders also shine like mirrors (yes/no) compared to the cylinders of older days.
So, I ask you. My friend has a 1989 Legend with 120K hard driven miles (high speed, mixed city, the whole deal) and never uses a drop of oil.
Did the new shops drop compression tests with leakdown tests with dye tracing?
Your the man -- I'd sure like to know if I'm going to have to go to a "race shop" for the good tests to fix an oil drinker.

Eric- You are right- there is no substitute for good diagnostics. Unfortunately, your HMO comparison is also valid. It all comes down to the indivudual shop. Each Service Manager is accountable to his District Manager in all things warranty. You have to be able to justify your spending of Acuras money to them. The Distrint Managers I deal with are good, customer oriented people. They understand the importance of good service and yet still maintain fair treatment to the customers, the shops and the factory. I am fortunate to have a great staff who believe in going the extra mile to help satisify our customers. Given the same circumstance, we would do all the testing on our own to determine the root cause of the oil usage, make a reccomendation as to how to repair it and then get approval from the Rep. We would check for leakage, clogged pcv or collapsed hoses, compression blow by, oil in the exhaust ect. Some dealers just don't have the dedicated people or ability to make this happen. Once the situation becomes adversarial, it is much harder to find an equitable solution. Both sides need to remain calm and find the middle ground. Thats where satisfaction lies for both.

I find it very strange that with today's manufacturing technology applied to the metals and fabrication of modern engines that you are experiencing this problem. I've owned several vehicles and have run them high mileage with only minimal oil consumption. Cases in point:
1987 T-Bird Turbo Coupe - 230,000 miles. Used 1qt oil every 2600 miles when purchased new and this remained consistent throughout the the 230K miles I drove it.
1993 Lincoln MK VIII - 4.6L - 185,000 miles.
Began using a quart every 3500 miles when I hit 155,000 miles.
Both the above vehicles had oil/filter changes using Valvoline 10W30 every 5000 miles. I never had any engine problems or issues on either vehicle.
Honda is known for precision engines so IMO you need a dealership who is concerned about this because your engine's oil consumption IS NOT NORMAL!

Wayne (and everyone else),
I appreciate your input. I guess for now I will wait and see what the results of my "500 mile" checkups are. But I can say that if they come back and say
1)it's my fault for only doing 7500 mile oil changes for the first 30,000 miles, or
2)there is no problem and its normal,
I will fight it.
To me it is unacceptable and I would think it should be unacceptable to Honda as well, as they boast "ultra-environmental friendly" vehicles.
Im still mad though that from the very beginning when i reported the problem to the dealer that they didn't check the PCV valve right away. That's the first thing the other garage I took it to checked and cleaned up.
And now the dealer looked at it and said its fine. (even though it doesn't rattle like i belive it should).
My car has just had problem after problem, (countless rattles, bad sunvisor, bad sunroof, bad drivers seat frame, easily warped rotors, etc...) and i have lost faith in the Honda/Acura reputation for quality.
