intermittent 2nd gear grind... anyone?

hey guys

I've been running on fresh rebuilt cl-s trans for about 8k miles.

The grind has happened a few times from first to second, but it went away the first time it happened (maybe 3-4 months ago).

It recently started happening again. It really only happens when I get on the car from 1st to 2nd. The last time it happened, I tried to replicate it, but I could not get it to grind no matter what.

Is this normal? Could my busted motor mounts be causing this?

Thanks

Motor mounts would have nothing to do with shifting.

I sense synchros, or cold tranny, or maybe possibly low tranny fluid.

push your clutch pedal ALL the way down during wot shifts. this is caused by the synchros no speeding down quick enough for you to jam it into second.

by depressing the clutch fully, you engage this process in a less harsh manner.

also, let off the gas BEFORE entering the clutch.

i used to do it too, takes practice

Mine does it when I rev up to around 6k in first and granny shift to second (like in slow moving traffic). Its annoying.

What fluid are you running? Im switching to GM synchromesh soon.

I get it now and then also. I thinks it's more in how i'm shifting/engaging the clutch and letting off the gas. I'm using Amsoil trans. fluid and it is a bit smoother.

I dont think its my shifting because I can go WOT and slam gears without a grind. Its only these slow speed grinds that I have.

as said it almost sounds like it is driver induced error, of not fully disengaging the clutch before shifting (also make sure the floor mat is not blocking the pedal from fully going down, there is a reason for that hook on the floor mat right in front of the seat, to help prevent the mat from slidding foward)

It's not driver error. That's what everybody says but the fact is, something isn't right with the car itself.

My car was doing it a while back, and i got a new clutch which solved the problem.

My car did this when I first got it and only when I was shifting as quick as I could... probably was still learning the timing of clutch disengagement and shifting... I figured it would have only gotten worse, but with 144k on the original clutch its been fine...

Thinking back, I think I may have had the grind a few times when shifting slow as civicdrivr said, but then again... not sure why you would want to be sucking that much gas in slow moving traffic. I usually shift around 2.5k during normal slow driving, saves more gas.

In most of the traffic I drive in, shifting to second is pointless. The second you do it, we come to a stop again.

But when I am at 5-6k rpms and I shift to second, its in the city doing around 20mph. For some reason I actually get better gas mileage if I slowly ring it out compared to shifting as low as possible and putting un-needed load on the motor.

its 90% driver induced. maybe 10% due to improper pressure plate engagement and disengagement.

gm synchromesh also helps with the syncho smoothness and takes out the notchiness that our trans have.

to say that there is something wrong with a honda designed manual gearbox is like slapping your mom on mothers day.

these things win awards

Lol well said, but my issue hasn't been here since I bought the car. And it doesn't happen when I drive other cars, and I can replicate it.

If you have your clutch dampner still installed, you may want to remove it and replace the OEM hose with something steel braided to increase pedal firmness. I used to have this problem as well; however, it went away when I did this mod. YMMV.

i get it from time to time. it's annoying, and maybe embarrassing, but nothing you can really do except slow your shifts down.

I get it too... When I first bought the car and did a WOT into second I grind EVERY TIME!!!! and I started slowing my shifts down a little bit and I don't grind at all... it's mainly a driver thing I think.

i never installed the clutch dampener.

im running penzoil syncromesh, the stuff that comes in a yellow jug.

i havent changed my fluid since the swap, i may do that this summer. i remember the tranny was soo smooth when i had fresh fluid in it.

i hope its driver error, if not, i would rather replace the 2nd gear syncro when i pull the motor soon.

anyways, thanks for all the replies.

its driver error. the clutch dampener is located inside the slave cylinder. there are two. remove this and you will feel what a true clutch pedal should be like.

yeah, driver error especially with people try to shift before the clutch is even fully disengaged (or is already reengaging), gotta get your timing correct
