Interesting Problem During WOT...

My car has the CompTech headers, Icebox and exhausts. During wide open thottle (WOT), the tach throws the needle up to and sometimes past 7000 RPM kicking off the rev limiter for a split second. Anyone else have this problem. Maybe the computer is still adjusting from the Icebox installation? Front tires spin on the upshift into second. Car is automatic. Should I go to Acura or wait?

Sometimes when Im in second and I floor it to make it downshift into first it will hit the rev limiter. The problem I have is that it won't shift back into second until I let off of the gas. I took it into Acura thinking the tranny was going but they insist it is fine. I cannot reproduce it for them however it has happened a few times.

I guess I'm not the only one with these weird things happening.

I actually asked this question about 6 months ago here. Most people thought I was crazy. Good to know I wasn't the only one.

It was right after I installed my OBX headers. Sometimes when I would floor it, going into second, my car would quickly bounce off the rev limiter.

Having headers makes the car rev quicker in VTEC, so I am thinking sometimes the transmission could not catch up for a split second and the car hit the limiter

I'd take this as a sign that the tranny is about to break... its 'lagging' between shifts... BAD!

i would be sure it's the RPM rev limiter...my car was low on oil and i got a fuel cut or fuel cut sensation at the vtec engagement point...check your oil level

When you say kicking off the rev limiter, do you mean 7000 rpm? Or 9000rpm?

I'm guessing 7000. The engine would probably blow at 9k.

7000k... Mine started doing it about 6 months before I got rid of the car. It only did it a few times, but my tranny never went on me, even after going to E-town and beating on the car, so I guess I was lucky

My car always shifts around 7100rpm's but that is with vsa off in ss mode. Is that not normal, Also I am on my 4th tranny in an auto. Maybe that's got something to do with it.?????

Yup ... that's it ... mine does that everytime ... I'm waiting for the 3rd tranny now. It doesnt only happen under WOT but also under moderate acceleration as well.

No, it's not the oil. I just changed it. The tranny feels normal, so I don't think it's that. Cusdaddy might be on the right track. It does rev faster with the mod equipment, but the computer should adjust, right?

I am missing something... At 7200 you reach fuel cut off. Naturally, the revs drop... if you continue to mash the pedal, you'll bounce the needle and you'll feel a jerking sensation. This sensation is fuel cut off being hit repeatedly... This does not equal failed tranny.

Someone please describe, in better detail, what is being discussed.

It's not the tranny. While keeping the petal floored, the tach when bounced off the rev limiter, cuts off fuel for a split second, then the tach drops to continue the rise again to 7000+ when the same thing happens again. If the car shifted just before the rev limiter, this wouldn't happen. The computer hasn't really adjusted yet to the Icebox or other mods since the battery was disconnected about 3 weeks ago. That is my guess.

I really get a kick out of the talk in this thread and have to laugh.

You guys are talking about:
Hitting WOT
Banging off the REV limiter
Revving over 7,000 RPM
Hitting the fuel cutoff
MASHING the throttle

And my favorite:
My car always shifts around 7100rpm's but that is with vsa off in ss mode. Is that not normal, Also I am on my 4th tranny in an auto.
Yet whenever someone blows a Tranny here they bitch and moan at Acura and say they drive like an old lady on her way to Church on Sunday.

I wish the tranny failures were because of hard driving, but most are not. These trannys are a problem for Honda across their product lines.

Case in point, I bought my TLS (over 2ys ago) right before my brother bought his wife a Honda mini van.

I drive my hard, chirping 2nd often, redlining it every time I drive it, just like I've driven every car I've ever owned and never had a tranny problem.

My brother's wife drives like an 'old lady" . . . and theirs is in the shop as we speak . . . getting a new tranny. :P

The service guy told him that Honda has a known problem with the Auto/OD trannys, which includes Acura.

So this misperception that driving you car hard will lead to failure soon is just that. Misperception. Of course, there is a line you cross between abuse and spirited driving. Running WOT to redline is not abuse. Hitting your rev limiter once in a while is not abuse. Hitting the limiter a lot and holding there is.

This is what happen. Say you are driving 15mph on 2nd gear, right. Now press the gas pedal all the way down, in D5, it's supposed to shift to 3rd at around 6700 +/-, but it hits and bounces off the rev limitter for a split second then shift.

My own experience, if the tranny is really messed up, you dont even have to floor the gas pedal all the way down and even you shift at 4000rpm in SS mode, it still jumps and bounces off the rev limitter. You would have to let go of the gas pedal for the rpm to drop so the tranny can shift.

Again, we are not talking of hitting the rev limiter in 2nd while you keep pressing on the gas pedal in SS mode (while you dont shift to 3rd).
