The importance of a oil catch can

After 7 months since I added my oil catch can, I decided to empty it today and see what it has prevented from going into my intake manifold.

If you dont have one of these I suggest getting one, its a very inexpensive mod that will keep you intake manifold clean and and flowing good.

ALL THIS OIL PLUS SOME THAT LEAKED OUT OF THE CATCH CAN WOULD HAVE BEEN ALL OVER MY INTAKE

THROTTLE BODY IS AS SPOTLESS AS IT WAS MONTHS AGO WHEN I LAST SAW IT DURING THE CATCH CAN INSTALL. NORMALLY THERE WILL BE A LITTLE OIL IN IT.

You can get a nice one off ebay, just try and get a small one for easy install location.

I didnt install it myself but it seems to be a matter of redirecting to lines from the motor to the tube. I may be wrong but hopefully a more tech person will chime in.

Normally cars only need upgraded oil catch cans if they are FI?
I remember on my S4 it was a major thing as well as the SRT-4 as to stop oil from leaking onto the intercooler etc.

why are our intakes sucking up oil and from where. Isn't that normal to have some lub for the intake manifold to function?

^^ I don't know how it's set up on the 2nd gen CL, but all the Honda's I've had in the past vent their crank pressure through the valve cover. It's usually a rubber hose that connects to the intake or intake manifold. By running a catch can, you will separate the oil from the pressurized air and stop it from being blown back into the combustion chamber.

I have one on my GSR motor between the PCV and intake manifold that vents to the atmosphere. There's a few companies that make nice looking 'kit', or you can put together your own. I've actually seen quite a few people use 20 oz. plastic soda bottles that they cut in half.

I got one of them on but I couldnt install the other 2 because I dont have a creset wrench. If you have one and want to play in the rain you can come by today else I will just wait till tomorrow when I take my car to my boys shop to get my tires put on.

thats too much money to pay for something like this. Its not gonna make or break the motor. Just get a simple looking one for 40 bucks if you can, they all are going to do the same.

When I bought all my P2R parts last summer Sean from P2R said he was going to make a catch can for the J32. The positioning of the vacuum hoses on their 4inch intake, that some of us have were set up to easily add a catch can. Maybe if there's enough interest they might make one for us finally?

As promised here is more pics.

2 lines to the can. One in and one out

Firs line comes out of the rear valve cover then into the catch can where all the oil gets spilled into.

Second line comes out of the catch can and returns the oil less air back to the motor through the rear plenum.

There you have it boys and girls.. very simple.

yea, its just got to have an inlet thats creates a vacuum so the extra oil cant get back out. All catch cans are pretty universal....

yea its pretty much a looks thing when it comes to these. Cheap or expensive, they are all going to do the exact same thing no better than the next name brand one.

I have been planning to do this, but I wasn't sure how or where to mount it. How is your catch can mounted/connected? Also, did you put steel wool or something else to ensure the oil doesn't get sucked back out?

No need to mount it. Usually the small ones can just hang there without a problem. No need to put anything in the can, it'll catch it as it.

the catch can is cheap insurance imo. Ebay one's are fine and like nupe said, they all serve the same purpose, just the name brands get expensive. Planning to do this in my evo soon

Got the can and there is no way I am going to let it hang, it needs some sort of support, otherwise with the pressure it is possible for the pipes to come off. Secondly, I will not be using the crappy ebay tubes, I read that they collapse under the heat of the engine. I will go to an autoparts store and get special automotive tubing that can withstand heat.
