Icebox Review (Brief)

Well, I had the Icebox installed 3 weeks ago professionally. I really don't see much of a difference. The computer must be reset by now. The only difference I noticed was that it's louder at WOT. I had a K&N filter in the standard box before the switch. Any of you guys who had the Icebox installed feel the same way? Anyone notice a difference in performance?

Yep, I feel the same way. Could be the hot weather though. I know when I was in NY last month when it was in the 50's there my car ran real fast. I noticed a big difference. Question on yours, Does your intake tube move up & down a little at the bend into the box. Where the filtter goes? Mine moves up & down, & makes the whole tube going to the TB move with it.

No, nothing moves. I noticed it drives better in the cooler weather also...when I didn't have the Icebox.

The ice-box doesn't help intake-velocity and a CAI has a real nasty 90-degree bend that doesn't help either!

I don't understand how people can "feel" a 5hp gain?? Even witht the header, I onlly really feel the acceleration being smoother...

thats kinda dissapointing to hear, this would be with any CAI right
?
Does the 90 degree turn really effect it. what if you cut a injen cia where it bends, then put the filter on. then it wouldnt be a cold air. you could just take your hood off for the track, that would probably not be areodynamic.

Ill just get mine during the winter so i feel my 2??$ wont be wasted

Maybe it's the 96 degree heat we've been getting here in the afternoon. Gas mileage? I haven't done a check on that yet.

oDD THAT you should mention it: I got a little better gas mileage with the ICEBOX on those Tanks that I did NOT get my Foot into the Pedal.

No Real Verifiable numbers, Only my day to day standard driving / Refueling, which is like clock work. I use to fill up every sunday night. After the ICEBOX that moved down a couple of days.

Probably only a few extra miles a tank, but it was definately noticeable.

I don't really believe that cruising around town you are going to feel the 5-10hp increase. As Zapata says, it seems to pull at harder at higher RPMs. I notice it most getting on the highway.

Fuel economy...with the headers and Icebox, I am getting 23-25mpg on average now. That is about 60% highway/40% smaller road driving. And I am pretty heavy on the gas whenever I can be. On my last highway trip I got around 29mpg and that wasn't all highway....maybe 80% highway cruising at 80mph the rest was in town/backroad going to LimeRock for Skip Barber.

I'd do it again if i had to. There is power in the mid range as well, w/o question! Tire spin hard. It's a mod well worth the money.

I'm finally putting mine in this Friday. I'll post for those inquiring minds some figures dealing with the fuel economy issue as my last 3 tankfuls have given me over 30 mpg so I have a good baseline to work with.

Zapata - thought you mentioned you were gonna dyno the Friday after the group install ... did you do this? Thinking about it, it probably wouldn't be useful for an A/B comparo since by adding the exhausts the results would be somewhat apples/oranges as opposed to Washington/Grannies.

Hey yea been super busy at work and I haven't had a chance yet but my schedule is getting better so in a week or so. The exhaust doesn't really yield that much so the results should be pretty close. If the numbers are REALLY off what i'll do is just take the old exhaust and bolt that back on and run it. I get the thing for an hour and to get the dyno numbers to the point where their peak and the time i'll have left should give me plenty of time. I'll keep everybody posted.

Why? Cause ONE person reports something bad? He is 96 degree heat!! Who knows what his driving habits are like and so if you drive hard you aren't going to get the ECU to learn.

I was one of the first with the Icebox on and reviewed it a great mod for the money on this car. People with Civics and Integras spend the same money for their intakes and yield less gains.

even if you don't feel the HP increase... you should feel the torque increase....but then again if you think 50 mph is getting on her than maybe not

if you enjoy the growl, the cai is still the best bang for the buck.

I'm not debating just expaniding on this statement. Yes, they achieve lower gains but the percentage increase is similar.

cai is not an icebox.

and btw, all this ecu learning and resetting the ecu for this and that reason is utter bullshit.

also make a note that the Ice-box uses a foam filter instead of the K&N filter. I think foam filter is better to keep dirt and dust from entering the throttle body...this is a debatable topic so your own judgement is required. Logically speaken the Ice-box filter is more covered than a CAI and make same power, there is no fear of hydrolock thats only if you value your engine , Ice-box cost about the same as others and is made of plastic which is more heat resistant than the metal CAI no matter how coated they are except for Xepher that one is made of plastic also. I believe the Ice-box makes more torque than the other intakes and the filter is easily re-oiled making it easy to do every other oil change like Comptech recommends. The K&N filter on the aEM and Injen require I believe 40K but you can do it every other except it is much harder to do. I think I've pointed out many pro's to the Ice-box and the only con is it doesn't look cool under the hood "looks too much like stock" and the CAI makes a cool sound if thats what your into not to say the Ice-box is quiet at WOT I think it sounds beautiful

I was going to order the Icebox for my friend with a 94' Integra not GSR..anyhow the Ice-box is purchased in two different pieces bottom and top. Both will cost $320 and that is with a discount and no shipping cost and the HP increase is max 5 HP so estimated I think any where from 3-4 HP for $320

Understood but...I too live in 96 degree heat...with tons of humidity. I'm sure I won't get the gains that other's get. I do drive pretty hard (I try not to but I have a lead foot ). I just want to make sure that $250 is worth it. I know I won't feel a difference...but in my weather situation...is it still worth it. Please excuse my ignorance. I don't know jack about cars.

You can keep your intake noise. I have no perforamnce problems with an AEM, or other CAI. My problem was the noise. I get none of that with the IceBox. Do I get the same gains? I don't know. I waited long enough for it, I installed it, it's not coming out now.

So the hp/tq increase is mid-range to top end only?

I finally decided, took me forever to make that decision too -- Icebox ordered last Friday afternoon. UPS tracking says it'll be on my porch today! I'll probably install this weekend.

Didn't mean to snap My humble apologies sir.

For you i think swaping your Thermostat and fan switch will help in the heat, especially if you drive the car alot. In conjunction with any intake it should provide nice gains. You won't be able to do anything for the humidity.

As far as it being worth it? Welp, I'd wait for some dyno's before you make a definitive decision.

No need to apologize...but apology accepted :P

Thermostat and fan switch huh? I will definatly look into that...thanks.

I'm seeing that some will be getting the dyno's soon so I will probably wait. I wanted to get one before next weekend though. I'm going down to West Palm to visit family and thought it would be a good project for me and my bro to work on.

I have installed the t-stat and fan switch and there are a few things you should know...

This mod only gives you piece of mind... You will not feel any gains. There is no way to tell that the car runs cooler because the stock temp gauge is inaccurate. The only thing I notice is that the fan comes on sooner and more often than it did before.

I am on the wall with an intake as well as some of the others and just cant decide.

I'm no mechanic, but I believe that is true. The gains are in mid to high RPMs. If you have headers, you might not feel the power gain of the Icebox that much. Make sense? You can feel the difference with headers @ 32 HP, but maybe not the Icebox at a much lower power addition.
