ice box vs cold air intake

I am sure this question has been answered many times but humor me since i a noob.

Anyway, what are the performance increases/warranty implications for an ice box versus a cold air?

Ive been out of the car game for a while as i just spent the last 5 years as a broke college student. Now that i am out, I just purchased my dream car; 01 cls w/nav.. I have big mod plans but have a lot of technology to catch up on. (I dont remember anything called an ice box back in the day when i was spending all my cash on mods for my 91 accord) Anyway, help with that question would be much appreciated.

the comptech ice box intake is a cold air intake. they just gave it the name "icebox"

Cool thanks. I was looking at pictures of an icebox and it looked like an actual box. More similar to a stock intake than an aftermarket, which is what caused me to question what it was.

check out weapon-r. they have an icebox that looks real nice. aluminum. not all plasticy like the comptech. I personally don't like the comptech. it's just like putting a foam cone filter in your stock air box. to me it's just too much money to spend on a piece of plastic and foam. just my 2cents

yeah....and gives you the same, if not more power than a AEM CAI ?? It IS a CAI....it has the piping coming below the box to reach below and suck up the cold air...it only looks stock to the eye yet performs like a CAI.

from the top it looks like just a box, but it actually does have a huge elbow pipe that shoots down to where the stock resonator box is to suck in cooler air.

recently other people have been talking about modifying the fake vent opening in the bumper on the '03 models (or removing the driving light on the '01-02 model) and modifying that to direct more air directly into the elbow pipe that sits behind that spot.

the comptech intake also has a nice deep hum to it at WOT, not loud like the aem, or the weopen r intakes. i don't know about the weopen R or the aem, but the comptech is also carb legal.

The Icebox is reported to give you a couple more HP. Not a big deal.

So, what do you want?

Looks? Ice box = stock looking CAIs = more ricey
Sound? Icebox sounds more stock, but is slightly louder. A CAI is louder. So if you're the kind of person that likes the sound of glasspack mufflers on a pick-up truck vs a nicer deep tone then the CAI may be for you.
Maintenance? Icebox is easier to access for cleaning the filter.
Cost? What can you get each for?

Pretty much a personally choice IMO.

Actually, it's called the icebox because you can actually put small ice packs in the box for even colder air. From what I've heard (from my dad) it's one of his and many others secrets for the drag strip.

I never thought about that, but thats a good point I guess you could do that.

and I'm sorry but I would never put anything made by Weapon R on my car.
